Sacred Heart Shuts Out Wagner 5-0

Junior Jon Lucas went 1-for-4 at the plate today
BOX SCORE

Staten Island, NY -
Sacred Heart captured the series against Wagner with a 5-0 shutout victory on getaway day at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Freshman RHP Troy Scribner was the story of the game firing a complete-game three-hit shutout as the Pioneers, who won three-of-four on the weekend, improve to 24-22 and 15-9 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Seahawks fall to 19-26 and 12-12 in the NEC.

Scribner (4-3), who retired the first 13 batters of the game in order, struck out four while walking two and hitting a batter over a career-best 9.0 innings. Also strong in defeat was junior RHP Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown), who struck out six while not issuing a free pass and allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits over 7.0 strong innings. Lucas (2-4) also notched one of the three Wagner hits in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning. Leading off the frame, Rob Griffith reached via a fielding error. After moving to second on a JJ Edwards single, Lucas buckled down in retiring the next two hitters via a pop up and a strikeout. Unfortunately for the Green & White, MJ Schifano picked the pair up with a two-out RBI double to left field, scoring Griffith while moving Edwards to third. Mike Drowne followed with an infield single deep in the hole to short, plating Edwards as Schifano advanced to third base.

The damage could have been worse but Tommy Higgins (So., Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) made an excellent play ranging toward second base to get Steve Tedesco at first base by a step to end the inning

In the top of the fifth inning, the Pioneers added to the lead when Drowne hit a solo home run to right center to extend the lead out to 3-0.

Junior Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) broke up the no-hit bid with one-out bunt single in the top of the fifth inning but was retired on a fielder's choice as the Seahawks came up empty.

Sacred Heart pushed the lead out to 4-0 in the top of the sixth with another one-out solo home run. Rob Griffith hit his fifth home run of the year to straight away center field off the batter's eye, pushing the lead out to 4-0.

Wagner threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, as senior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) drew a lead-off walk before McDonnell followed suit with a one-out walk. However the pair were stranded when Scribner induced a pop out and a fly out, quelling the threat.

The Pioneers pounced on the Seahawk bullpen for an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Tedesco was hit leading off the frame, before moving to second on a Jeff Heppner single. Griffith then drove in Tedesco with a RBI-single to left field, providing the final 5-0 score.

Gaby Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) recorded the only other Seahawk hit while extending his career-best hitting streak to five games. The freshman backstop also threw out two runners trying to steal.

The Green & White host NYIT on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 pm.
