Saint Peter's Clips Wagner 10-9 In Non-Conference Action

Senior Vin Avella blasted his team-leading ninth home run
BOX SCORE

Jersey City, NJ -
Sean McFadden's bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Saint Peter's (10-23) to a 10-9 victory over Wagner (16-15) in non-conference action at Jaroschak Field. Despite the loss, the Seahawk bats crushed a season-high four home runs while rapping out 12 hits.

The four long balls are the most since the Green & White hit five in the second game of a doubleheader at FDU on April 19, 2008.

Senior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA), junior Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy), junior Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) and sophomore Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) all recorded two hits and a home run, leading the way for the Green & White. Junior Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) also notched two hits on the day, rounding out the multi-hit performers.

Wagner struck first with an unearned run in the opening frame. With two outs, Boyd, who previously extended his hitting streak to a team-best 14 games with a single, scored from first base on a throwing error.

The Seahawks added two runs to the lead in the top of the second on a two-run single to right field off the bat of Higgins, plating Lucas and Jamison.

Saint Peter's rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning with four runs on six hits.

Boyd immediately tied the game up at 4-4 with his third home run of the year, a solo shot to left center on the first pitch of the third inning.

The Peacocks reclaimed the lead in the bottom part of the third on Justyn Carter's bases loaded single through the left side, plating Cody Haack.

Saint Peter's added three runs in the bottom part of the fourth on a Haack RBI double before Tom Bouck deposited a two-run home run to left center, extending the lead out to 8-4.

Wagner got two of those runs back in the top of the fifth inning on a pair of home runs to left center. Higgins' first career home run and Avella's team-leading ninth round tripper of the year cut the deficit to 8-6.

After Saint Peter's pushed the lead out to 9-6 in the bottom part of the fifth, the Seahawks answered with a Jamison two-run shot to left field, scoring junior Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon), who had singled to lead off the inning.

The Green & White tied the game up at 9-9 in the top of the seventh inning on an Avella's second hit of the game, a RBI double down the left-field line that scored Higgins.

Saint Peter's threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning but Kevin McDonnell (Jr., Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) made a nice catch in right field before doubling off the Peacock runner at first base. Saint Peter's went ahead in the bottom of the eighth, but the damage could have been greater had it not been for McDonnell, who gunned out a runner at the plate for his third assist of the game. The Nutmeg state native now has a team-best eight outfield assists.

The Peacocks recorded 18 hits off of five Wagner pitchers, as four players who notched at least three hits led by Bouck, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and his second home run of the year.

Anthony DeLeo (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to collect the win while junior LHP David Rees (Staten Island, NY / Xavier) (2-3) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit and three walks over 1.1 innings.

Wagner heads to San Diego State for the first of four games on Friday at 9:00 pm (EST).
