Junior Jon Lucas hit his second home run of the year
BOX SCORE

Emmitsburg, MD -
Mount St. Mary's rallied for a 4-3 victory over Wagner in the second game of today's doubleheader at Straw Family Stadium despite an outstanding performance by junior Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown).

Lucas (1-3) struck out four while allowing four runs, just one earned, on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. While also serving as the designated hitter, the hard-throwing righty was a perfect 2-for-2 with a solo home run.

The Seahawks won the first game by a 5-4 count and are now 8-11 and 5-2 in the NEC while the Mountaineers are 9-13 and 5-2 in the league.

Lucas started out the game strong, retiring the first 11 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mount St. Mary's starter RHP Vincent Molesky matched Lucas over the first three frames, allowing no runs.

Wagner had a chance to break through in the top of the third. With runners on first-and-third and one out, Molesky induced an inning-ending double play.

Lucas staked the Green & White to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, with a solo home run to right center with one out.

Shane Eyler evened the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning with a lead-off home run. Andrew Caron followed with a single through the left side and moved up to second base on a Mark Quaranta sacrifice before Josh Winter drew a walk. The Mountaineers assumed a 2-1 lead on a Seahawk error before Tommy Flynn pushed the lead out to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.

The Green & White immediately responded with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) led off with a single. Senior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) then continued his assault on Mount pitching with a double off the fence in center field, scoring McDonnell all the way from first. After moving to third on a Lucas single, the power-hitting first baseman was brought around on a Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) sacrifice fly, tying the game at 3-3.

In the bottom part of the frame, Eyler drew a two-out walk. Pinch hitter Mike Matta then reached via a fielding error and Joe Cavanaugh made the Green & White pay with a pinch-hit single through the left side, giving the Mount a 4-3 lead.

Molesky retired the first two hitters in the top of the seventh inning, before Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) drew a walk. Matta, who pinch hit in the designated hitter hole, was then called in to pitch and collected his fourth save by inducing a game-ending pop out.

Avella has now hit safely in 13 games and is hitting .380 (27-71) with a NEC-leading eight home runs and 30 RBI in just 19 games.

Molesky (4-2) earned the win for the Mountaineers, striking out two and yielded three runs on six hits and four walks over 6.2 innings.
