Mount St. Mary’s Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Wagner 12-5

The Wagner College men's lacrosse team scored the first two goals of the game but was unable to sustain the momentum as Mount St. Mary's posted a 12-5 victory at chilly Wagner College Stadium. 

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-7 on the season while, 0-1 in the MAAC while the Mountaineers improve to 3-2 on the season, 1-0 in the MAAC. 

Freshman attackman Cody Isdaner (Gladwyne, PA/Episcopal Academy) scored the first goal of the game with 10:10 remaining in the opening quarter and sophomore attack Mike Scheerer (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) followed up with a goal at the 8:25 to put the Seahawks on top 2-0. 

After the Mount reeled off three unanswered goals to go up 3-2, junior attack Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) blasted home a shot off an assist by senior midfielder Chris Ridente (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) to knot the game at 3-3. The Mountaineers then took the lead for good on a Brett Schmidt goal with 13:04 left in the second quarter en route to seizing an 8-4 advantage at halftime.
 
Mount St. Mary's then scored two goals in each of the third and fourth quarters in pulling away for the 12-5 win. Five different Seahawks scored one goal apiece in Isdaner, Scheerer, Macumber, sophomore attackman Mike Hurley (Billerica, MA/Billerica) , and freshman attackman Brian Faughnan (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan). Senior goalie Michael Gutkin (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) had nine saves for the Seahawks. 

Mount St. Mary's out-shot Wagner 39-27, led in ground balls 39-30 and won 13-of-19 faceoffs. The game was physical throughout as the team's combined for 16 penalties. 

The Mount was paced in scoring by Andrew Scalley who recorded six points on the strength of three goals and two assists. Jake Willertz also had three goals for the Mountaineers while Cody Lehrer, Brett Schmidt and Mike Adkins all tallied two goals apiece. Goalie T.C. DiBartolo recorded 10 saves on the afternoon while A.J. Shaufler had two saves while playing the game's final 3:30. 

Wagner is next in action on Saturday, April 3 when the Seahawks travel to Marist to meet the Red Foxes in a 1:00 pm faceoff.
