Six-Run Third Lifts Wagner To 11-6 Win Over NYIT

Wagner sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the third while scoring six runs in an 11-6 non-conference win over NYIT at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the win, the Seahawks clinch their first winning season since 1990 while improving to 26-19. In defeat the Bears fall to 18-27-1.

Seven different regulars hit safely for the Green & White led by the sophomore trio of Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy), Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) and Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) as each student-athlete notched two hits. Sophomore Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) went 1-2 with three RBI and a run while senior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) was 1-2 with three runs and two walks. Sophomore Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) added a two-run single while junior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) recorded a RBI single.

Despite not recording a hit, junior Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) made his presence felt, scoring twice after walking to lead off an inning while notching his NEC-best 33rd stolen base of the year and matching his own Wagner single-season record. He is now just three stolen bases off of Joe Francisco's school-record total of 87.

Junior RHP Ian Karlsson (Brooklyn, NY / Xavierian) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while improving to 3-2 on the year. Sophomore David Rees (Staten Island, NY / Xavier), senior Kevin Rush (Metuchen, NJ / Meutchen) and classmate Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) concluded the game with 4.0 combined innings of one-run ball while allowing just two hits after the fifth inning.

Eric Johnson (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Four players recorded multi-hits for the Bears, led by Steve McNamara, who was 2-4 with two runs and two RBI. Eric Cos also notched two hits, highlighted by his first home run of the year.

Wagner now begins a crucial four-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series with Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, May 15 at 3:00 pm.
