BOX SCORE

Hamden, CT –
Quinnipiac scored seven runs over the second and third innings in a 7-5 win over Wagner in the second game of a doubleheader at Bobcats Field while securing a sweep on the day. The Bobcats improve to 9-17 and 2-4 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Green & White fall to 11-13 and 2-4 in the NEC.

Quinnipiac claimed game one by a 4-3 score.

Wagner struck first for the second-straight game with a pair of runs in the Seahawks' second trip to the plate. Sophomore Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) led off with a single before classmate Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) doubled him over to third. Senior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) made it 1-0 with a RBI ground out, plating Lucas while moving Boyd over to third. Sophomore Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) extended the lead out to 2-0 with a line-drive single through the left side, plating Boyd.

Quinnipiac responded with four runs in the bottom of the second as Ben Farina delivered the big blow with a three-run home run.

The Bobcats added three runs in the bottom of the third, extending the lead out to 7-2 while chasing Wagner starter LHP Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) after just 3.0 innings.

The Green & White battled back with two runs in the top of the fourth. Drechsel singled through the left side with two outs and Logan followed with a two-run home run to deep right center, cutting the lead to 7-4.

The Seahawks tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth while slicing the Bobcat lead to 7-5. Junior Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) got things going with a one-out infield single. He was moved over to third on sophomore Jared Gruccio's (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) base hit to right center, which extended his hitting streak to 10 games. One batter later, Lucas rapped a two-out RBI single to right center. Boyd then drove a ball to deep left center that was hauled in by center fielder Brian Monack, ending the Wagner threat.

That was it for the Wagner offense as the Green & White were set down in order in the top of the seventh by RHP Andy Mayer.

Mayer yielded five runs on eight hits but struck out five and did not walk batter over 7.0 innings while improving to 3-2 on the season. The win was the 20th of Mayer's career, setting a school record for Division I victories. Rice fell to 0-4 on the year, giving up seven runs over 3.0 innings. Freshman RHP Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) relieved Rice and did not allow a run over 3.0 innings while striking out three and not walking a batter.

Logan went 2-3 with his second home run of the year and three RBI while Lucas was also 2-3 with a run and a RBI, leading the Wagner offense.

Joe Poletsky went 3-3 with two runs and two RBI and Chris Migani was 2-4 to pace Quinnipiac.

The teams lock horns for another doubleheader tomorrow at 12:00 pm.
