BOX SCORE
West Long Branch, NJ – Junior RHP
Matt Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) led Wagner to a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth with 6.1 innings of one-run all in the Seahawks' 3-1 win at the MU Baseball Field. The two wins mark the first time the Hawks have been swept in a Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader since Wagner took both games from Monmouth in the final doubleheader of the 2006 season. The Seahawks improve to 16-14 and 6-5 in the NEC while the Hawks fall to 18-16 and 7-4 in the NEC.
Watson collected the win, striking out two while yielding just one run on five hits over 6.1 innings of work. The crafty right-hander improves to 5-1 on the year while lowering his team-best ERA to 2.41. Senior
Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) relieved Watson in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and third and one out. The hard-throwing right-hander coaxed two fly outs, preserving his second save of the day and his seventh of the year in as many opportunities.
Monmouth scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Brett Holland singled sharply up the middle with one out before being advanced to second on a Ryan Terry sacrifice bunt. Nick Pulsonetti brought home Holland with a run-scoring single through the left side.
Wagner tied the game up in the top of the fifth. Sophomore
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) singled to lead off the frame before advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher. Sophomore
Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) greeted Hawks reliever Steve Sanguiliano with a single through the left side, plating Martutartus while tying the game up at 1-1. The Seahawks then went ahead on a throwing error by the Monmouth shortstop, allowing Jamison to score all the way from first. Wagner tacked on an additional run on a run-scoring infield single from senior
Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford), bringing home pinch-runner
Brian Battaglia (Howell, NJ / Howell).
Monmouth threatened in each of the game's final three frames but were denied each time, stranding four runners.
Sanguiliano fell to 1-2, yielding two unearned runs while striking out four over 3.0 innings.
Martutartus was 2-3 with a double and a run to lead the way for the Green & White.
The teams conclude their four game series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
