Staten Island, NY – Maine collected a 6-2 game-two victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Seahawks fall to 9-7 while the Black Bears are now 13-11.
The Green & White captured game one by a 9-6 count.
With no score in the bottom of the third, Wagner struck for two runs. Sophomore
Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) led off with an infield single. Freshman
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) followed with a four-pitch walk. Reigning NEC Co-Player of the Week sophomore
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead with a RBI-double to right center. Junior
Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) then reached on an error to load up the bases with nobody out. Unfortunately, the Green & White would only get one more run as Higgins scored on junior
Joe Conforti's (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) RBI groundout.
Maine immediately responded with five runs, on six hits, while sending 11 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth.
The Black Bears added one more run in the top of the sixth for the game's final 6-2 tally.
Wagner threatened in each of the final four innings, but was stifled each time.
Gruccio went 2-3 with a run to lead the way for the Seahawks while Martutartus was 1-3 with a RBI-double and Conforti was 1-3 with a walk and a RBI.
Maine RHP Pat Quinn (2-0) collected the win, yielding two runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. AJ Bazdanes picked up his second save of the year, striking out three over 2.1 hitless innings.
Tony Patane paced the 13-hit Maine attack, going 3-4 at the plate.

Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) fell to 0-2 on the year, surrendering three runs on five hits while striking out three over 3.1 innings. Freshman RHP
Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) was solid out of the bullpen, striking out three over 2.2 innings of work.
The Seahawks host Rutgers tomorrow, March 31, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at 3:00 pm. As always, admission is free to the park.
