BOX SCORE
Staten Island, NY – Senior RHP
Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) recorded his school-record 14th career save and junior RHP
Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) improved to 4-1 on the year in Wagner's come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Maine in non-conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Seahawks claimed their second-straight win while improving to 8-6 as Maine falls to 12-10.
The Wagner bullpen was on the mark for the second-straight game, recording 3.0 innings of scoreless ball after hurling 6.0 scoreless innings against Lafayette on Wednesday. The offense was also on point, recording 11 hits but more importantly went 4-8 (.500) with runners in scoring position after going 3-23 (.130) over the previous two games.
The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, using three singles. The Seahawks got one of those runs back in the bottom part of the second on a
Brian Martutartus (So., Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) sacrifice fly, scoring senior
Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford).
Wagner tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on
Jack Rice's (So., Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) two-out single through the left side, plating junior
Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold), who had reached third with a pair of stolen bases after reaching on a fielder's choice.
Maine reclaimed the lead at 3-2 in the top of the fifth on Danny Menendez' RBI single to left. The Black Bears recorded four hits in the frame and the damage could have been worse had it not been for Drechsel, who picked off a Maine runner at first, and Morrison, who induced an inning-ending double play.
The Seahawks again rallied, this time taking an insurmountable lead in the bottom part of the fifth, scoring three times while sending eight batters to the plate. Csakai singled to right center, opening the inning. After a pop out, he moved over to second with his third stolen base of the game. Rice brought him around with another two-out RBI single through the left side, tying the game at 3-3. Drechsel and freshman
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) followed with walks, to load up the bases. Martutartus followed with a two-run double to left field, scoring Rice and Drechsel to make it 5-3 Wagner.
Maine cut the lead to 5-4 with an unearned run in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Menendez singled to lead off the inning. He stole second before being moved over to third on a ground out. Senior RHP
Kevin Rush (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen) entered and coaxed Maine's No. 4 hitter Ian Leisenheimer into a weak grounder to second before Justin Leisenheimer hit a slow grounder up the third-base line that Rush fired to first, getting the runner by a step to quell the threat.
In the top of the ninth, Tony Patane welcomed Huenber with a lead-off double down the left-field line. That would be as far as Patane would go as Huebner induced a lazy fly to left for the first out. Menendez then hit a liner back to the mound, which allowed Huebner to get Patane at third base on a fielder's choice. Huebner closed out his second save of the year by retiring Myckie Lugbauer on a routine grounder to first.
Morrison picked up his NEC-best fourth win of the year, striking out four while yielding four runs, three earned, on 10 hits and two walks over 6.0 innings. Kevin Scanlan fell to 1-3, giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
Eight different Seahawks hit safely, led by sophomore
Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional), who recorded a career-best three hits. Rice was 2-4 with two RBI while Martutartus went 1-3 with three RBI. Csakai scored two runs while notching three stolen bases and Drechsel scored two runs, rounding out the top-performers for the Green & White.
Menendez went 3-5 with a RBI to pace the Maine offense, which recorded 12 hits.
The teams return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader, starting at 12:00 pm.
