MADISON, N.J. — The Seahawks have locked down a postseason spot with their win on Saturday, gutting out a 10-9, walk-off victory over Coppin State. With the win, Wagner takes the series over the Eagles and earns a spot in the 2026 NEC Tournament.
This is Wagner's fourth consecutive season to qualify for the postseason. In 2025, the Seahawks earned the No. 2 seed and ultimately finished third in the tournament. With the win over Coppin State, Wagner moves to 21-8 in NEC play. That marks eight series wins in 2026, with six of those coming consecutively.
Wagner scored its 10 runs on 13 hits and four errors gave a lot of life to a Coppin State offense that was otherwise quite limited on Saturday — the Wagner pitching staff held the Eagles to just four hits and recorded nine strikeouts. Junior Keith Davis gets the win, now 3-1 this season.
Nine Seahawks recorded a hit. Graduate Lukas Torres was 3-for-6 with three RBIs. Junior Joseph Mennella, junior Dylan Immel and redshirt junior Evan McRae each added a pair of RBIs as well. Wagner's hitters struck out just four times.
It was a back-and-forth battle on Saturday before the Seahawks were able to walk it off. Wagner led 3-0 heading into the fifth, then 3-2 into the sixth.
A leadoff triple from graduate Lukas Torres opened the game, then an RBI groundout from senior Nicholas Mazzotta gave Wagner the early 1-0 lead. In the third, a pair of singles had Mazzotta on second, then a two-RBI single from junior Joseph Mennella scored both Mazzotta and junior Diego Tavarez to put Wagner up 3-0. A two-run shot from Marcus Sanders in the fifth brought the Eagles within one, trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the frame.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, a heavy downpour forced a weather delay that was ultimately a 53-minute stoppage. Coppin State went to a new pitcher out of the delay, going to Jake Cumming, who got Mennella to fly out to end the inning.
Wagner stuck with senior starter Colin Trizuto, who had limited the damage from Coppin State through five innings despite a steady rain. A pair of throwing errors and a two-RBI double had Wagner going to the bullpen down 4-3. Sophomore Frankie Nardo got a pop up on his first batter, then allowed a pair to score on an RBI groundout and wild pitch.
Trailing 6-3 into the bottom of the sixth, the Wagner offense had work to do. Redshirt junior Evan McRae worked a two-out walk, moving to second on a single from freshman Brendan McLoughlin. Sophomore Jayden Alvarez, the bottom of the order, walked to load the bases for Torres, who sent a two-RBI single into right field.
Nardo put the Eagles away in order in the seventh to keep the Seahawks within a run, then the bottom of the frame saw another lead change — a two-RBI double from McRae scored junior Dylan Immel and Mennella.
Up 7-6, Mazzotta entered to pitch in the eighth but ran into some command issues. He allowed a pair of runs to score on two wild pitches, putting Wagner behind 9-8. The offense though, had his back.
Cumming allowed a leadoff single and two walks to load the bases with two outs for Immel, who sent a single through the left side to swing the lead back in favor of the Seahawks. Up 9-8, Wagner forced Coppin State to go to the bullpen again and Mekenna Wakakuwa entered, inducing a fly out from McRae to keep the lead at just one.
The chaos wasn't over, though. The Seahawks went to junior Christopher Collina in the ninth, who walked his first batter. Another call to the bullpen brought in left-handed junior Keith Davis, who induced a fly out then allowed a single. He struck out his third batter, but an error from Mazzotta saw Emilio Feliciano scoring from second to tie the game at nine.
Coppin State had not taken the lead, though, and Wagner just needed one opportunity. A one-out walk and stolen base for Alvarez brought always-steady Torres to the plate. With a 1-1 count, Torres sent a single through the right side that was deep enough to score Alvarez to walk the game off.
Next up, Wagner and Coppin State return to Vincent J. & Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark for a 1 p.m. EDT matchup on Sunday, May 10.
