MADISON, N.J. — Wagner fell in its series finale against Coppin State, going down 12-11 and stranding the tying run at third base in a high-scoring Sunday game.
The Seahawks were hosting the Eagles for the penultimate regular season series of 2026, clinching an NEC Tournament berth on Saturday and looking for a sweep of the Eagles on Sunday but falling just short.
Wagner scored its 11 runs on 15 hits, outhitting Coppin State but failing to overcome a six-run first inning. Senior Nicholas Mazzotta had a big day, 4-for-5 with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Junior Dylan Immel was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Each recorded a double on Sunday.
Wagner got on the board in the second with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Andrew Marquis, scoring Immel, then sophomore Jayden Alvarez added an RBI double to score Mazzotta. Trailing 8-2 in the bottom of the third, junior Joseph Mennella hit his 12th home run of 2026, a two-run shot to left centerfield that scored junior Diego Tavarez to make it an 8-4 game.
The Eagles held the Seahawks scoreless for three innings, with Wagner cutting the lead to one in the seventh in a late effort to rally. A pair of walks had runners on for Immel, whose RBI double scored Tavarez and put Mennella on third. Another RBI double, this one from Mazzotta, scored both Immel and Mennella to make it 9-7. Mazzotta moved to third on a balk and after a Coppin State pitching change, a sacrifice fly from freshman Brendan McLoughlin pushed Mazzotta across to make it a one-run deficit.
Coppin State tacked on three more in the eighth, though, and a two-RBI double from Mazzotta in the bottom of the frame made it a one-run game once again. McLoughlin was hit to lead off the ninth and Alvarez doubled to put a pair in scoring position for graduate Lukas Torres. He was able to ground out, scoring McLoughlin and bringing Wagner within one, but that was all the life the Seahawks were able to muster.
Next up, Wagner hosts Mercyhurst for the final weekend of the regular season. The series begins Thursday, May 14 with an 11 a.m. EDT game at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark.
