DOVER, Del. — Wagner dropped the middle game of the series, 5-1, to Delaware State on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets struck early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning behind four hits, highlighted by an RBI double and a two-run triple.
Graduate student Lukas Torres recorded Wagner's first hit of the afternoon with a single in the sixth inning before stealing second base, but the Seahawks were unable to capitalize. Torres and junior Joseph Mennella accounted for Wagner's only two hits of the contest.
Junior Diego Tavarez helped Wagner get on the board in the seventh inning after drawing a leadoff walk and advancing to third following an error and a flyout. Junior Dylan Immel then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Tavarez and cut the deficit to 3-1.
Delaware State answered in the bottom half of the inning, adding two insurance runs to extend its lead to 5-1. Wagner was retired in order over the final two innings as the Hornets secured the win.
Redshirt sophomore Joseph Steventon got the start on the mound for Wagner, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out two. Redshirt junior Braden Lowe worked the final three innings in relief, allowing two runs while striking out one.
Wagner finished with one run on two hits, while Delaware State totaled 13 hits in the contest.
