NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Wagner added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at nine and force extras, but CCSU was able to score a runner from third on a wild pitch to take the series opener 10-9.
Freshman Brendan McLoughlin had the hero swing for the Seahawks that brought the team back in contention, a two-RBI single to centerfield to score sophomore Matt Sutera and junior Josiah Ross. The two-run ninth was one of three multi-run innings the Seahawks had on Thursday.
McLoughlin finished 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, joining junior Dylan Immel and senior Nicholas Mazzotta as the three Wagner batters to finish with a pair of the team's eight RBIs on Thursday. Immel was 2-for-6 with a run scored. Sutera and graduate Lukas Torres each finished their day 3-for-5.
Wagner hit well against each pitcher the Blue Devils threw, scoring four, three and two off the first three CCSU pitchers, but Niko Christon pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up just one hit. He takes the win for the effort, with Wagner junior Keith Davis taking the loss. Davis went 3.0 innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit but throwing the final wild pitch that allowed CCSU to score the winning run.
The Seahawks return to the CCSU Baseball Field for game two, set to begin at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, April 3 as the team looks to even the series.
