EASTON, Mass. — The Wagner College baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader against Stonehill at Lou Gorman Field.
Game 1
Both the Seahawks and Skyhawks failed to produce much offense early on in the game. Stonehill broke the seal in the bottom of the fifth on a Cam Morrison single to make it a 1-0 lead in favor of the Skyhawks.
Sophomore Matt Sutera tied the game at one in the top of the seventh, doubling to left center to bring in junior Dylan Immel. In the bottom half of the inning, Stonehill put together four runs to take a 4-1 lead heading into the eighth.
The Seahawks battled back with two runs of their own. Senior Nicholas Mazzotta and junior Diego Tavarez both added one RBI in the top half of the eighth inning to make it a two-run contest.
In the ninth inning, the Seahawks failed to reach base to make any effort at a comeback, ultimately falling to the Skyhawks 5-3 score in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader.
On the mound, senior Colin Trizuto pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. Junior Keith Davis relieved Trizuto, pitching 1.2 innings while allowing one earned run on three hits and two strikeouts.
As a team, Wagner scored its three runs on three hits.
Game 2
The Seahawks put up two runs in the top half of the first inning. Immel singled up the middle to score graduate student Lukas Torres and Tavarez, both of whom had reached on errors earlier in the inning.
Stonehill would take a 3-2 lead at the end of the third inning. Sophomore Jayden Alvarez responded with a single to left field to bring in Mazzotta, who had singled to centerfield earlier in the inning.
Between the fifth and seventh innings, Wagner put up nine runs including a five-run seventh inning to lead 12-3 midway through the seventh. Junior Joseph Mennella doubled to left field and cleared the bases as Tavarez, Alvarez, and freshman Brendan McLoughlin crossed home plate to extend Wagner's lead.
Redshirt sophomore Joseph Steventon pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out seven. Redshirt junior Braden Lowe relieved Steventon and threw 2.2 innings. Steventon improves to 2-2 on the season.
In the end, Wagner prevailed by a 12-5 score. The rubber match between the Seahawks and the Skyhawks is set to be rescheduled. A date and time for that third game have yet to be announced.
The Seahawks currently sit at 15-19 with a 13-7 mark in NEC play.
Following game three of the Stonehill series, the Green & White welcome Patriot League member Lafayette to SIUH Community Park for a 3 p.m. start on Tuesday, April 21.
