Baseball Wins Fifth NEC Series with Sunday Win over Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. — A heavy mist resulted in less-than-ideal game conditions for Sunday's rubber match against Stonehill, but Wagner stayed steady on the mound and at the plate to take an 8-4 win over the Skyhawks.

After a postponement Friday and a Saturday doubleheader, forecasted rain in Easton had Stonehill set the series finale for a 10 a.m. EDT start time that saw misty skies and low temperatures but ultimately made the time for all nine innings to be played. Wagner's starter, senior Justin Roitman, moves to 4-0 on the season after going 6.0 innings pitched, allowing a pair of hits and tying the season high strikeout total by a single Wagner pitcher, set at eight by Roitman earlier this season.

This is Wagner's third consecutive NEC series win and the fifth of 2026. The Seahawks are now 14-7 in conference play, moving to 16-19 in 2026.

The Skyhawks outhit the Seahawks, finishing with their four runs scored on 14 hits, but the defense held strong and Stonehill ultimately left 13 runners stranded despite getting a hit off each of the four arms Wagner used in the game.

Graduate Lukas Torres and juniors Diego Tavarez, Joseph Mennella and Dylan Immel each finished with a pair of hits in a day where the Seahawks were only able to work three walks. Seven different Wagner batters recorded a hit. Senior Nicholas Mazzotta and freshman Brendan McLoughlin each finished with a hit and a pair of RBIs.

Wagner scored across six innings, only scoring multiple runs in two of those, but the Skyhawks, on the other hand, were only able to score solo runs and only managed that in four frames.

Junior Jackson Blakley opened the scoring in the second with a sacrifice fly to score Immel from third, who had led off with a triple that was just the third by a Wagner hitter this season. Stonehill answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame from Jamison Howard, but that was all the offense the Skyhawks were able to muster.

Both teams scored solo runs in the third as well, tied at 2-2 through a scoreless fourth, but Wagner kept moving the line in the fifth — sophomore Jayden Alvarez hit a one-out single, moved over to second on a walk from Torres then to third on a fielder's choice and ultimately scored the team's third run of the game on a wild pitch.

Stonehill went to Jack Welsch out of the bullpen in the sixth, but Wagner ambushed him early, with Immel and Mazzotta hitting back-to-back one-out singles and moving into scoring position on a sacrifice fly and stolen base, respectively. McLoughlin sent a single through the left side and into shallow left field to score both runners and give Wagner the 5-2 lead.

In the seventh, Wagner added a sixth run that the Skyhawks answered in the seventh when sophomore William Grayson entered to pitch, stacking a double and an RBI single to score their first run since the third inning. Two hits in an inning was the most Stonehill was able to string together until the eighth, when a pair of pinch hitters brought some life, but junior Keith Davis entered to replace Grayson and was ultimately able to escape the jam allowing just one run. Wagner led 6-4 heading to the ninth.

A pair of singles opened the inning for Wagner, then an RBI groundout from Immel and sacrifice fly from Mazzotta scored juniors Diego Tavarez and Josiah Ross to add cushion and give the Seahawks an 8-4 lead. Mazzotta entered to pitch in the ninth and loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, but then recorded back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to close the game out. Wagner's lead was one run too many for Mazzotta to earn the save.

Next up, Wagner has a pair of midweek games on deck — a Tuesday, April 21 game against Lafayette and a Wednesday, April 22 game against Princeton before heading to Princess Anne, Maryland next weekend to take on UMES.
