WEST POINT, N.Y. — Wagner and Army traded blows early, but a high-scoring Black Knights offense proved too much and the Seahawks fell 18-8 on Tuesday.
It was a back-and-forth battle across the first four innings, with Wagner scoring three, three, one and one while the Black Knights answered with four, four and two across the bottom of the frames. A save appearance from Army's Jakob Vanderhave marked the difference in the game, shutting out Wagner across the final three innings while the Black Knights up up eight runs between the fifth and sixth.
Wagner finished with its eight runs on 10 hits, with juniors Joseph Mennella and Dylan Immel finishing with a pair of hits each batting fourth and fifth for the Seahawks, respectively. Mennella collected three RBIs on a three-run home run in the first, putting Wagner up 3-0.
Graduate Lukas Torres and junior Diego Tavarez were each 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, four of just six total walks issued by the Black Knights in the contest. Eight individual Seahawks collected a hit on Tuesday.
The Seahawks added three more runs in the second on a wild pitch and two RBI singles, then scored solo runs on an RBI double from senior Nicholas Mazzotta in the third and another from sophomore Jayden Alvarez in the fourth.
Next up, the Seahawks travel to Easton, Massachusetts to take on Stonehill in a weekend NEC series. Held at Lou Gorman Field, the series opens up on Friday, April 17 with a 3 p.m. EDT game.
