WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Wagner put up a well-rounded effort in Sunday's win over New Haven, taking a 14-5 victory over the Chargers to avoid the series sweep.
After New Haven was able to take walk-off wins on Friday and Saturday, Wagner came into Sunday needing a win and put up a solid effort to secure game three. The Seahawks are now 7-5 in NEC play in 2026.
Senior Justin Roitman threw 6.0 innings aw Wagner's started, allowing just five runs to score while striking out six New Haven batters. With the win, Roitman moves to 2-0 on the season. Using just two arms on the day, junior Tyler Vargas entered to pitch the final 3.0 innings, holding the Chargers off the board and allowing just one hit.
The Seahawks scored their 14 runs on 14 hits, batting in 13 and working 11 walks. Sophomore Matt Sutera led the way, going 3-of-5 with a pair of runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Junior Diego Tavarez, junior Joseph Mennella, junior Dylan Immel and senior Nicholas Mazzotta each added a pair of hits as well.
Tavarez had a massive day, hitting a double, adding a stolen base and walking three times. Redshirt junior Evan McRae did not log a hit in the game but instead walked twice.
Wagner scored its first run of the day in the second, with junior Omar Carreras hitting a single to left centerfield, advancing to second on a groundout then scoring on a throwing error from the New Haven third baseman. The Chargers put up four runs in the bottom of the frame, but Wagner was quick to answer in the fourth.
A walk and four consecutive singles allowed Wagner to score a pair of runs to tie the game in the top of the third, then a sacrifice fly from freshman Brendan McLoughlin pushed the Seahawks ahead 5-4. New Haven was able to add another run in the fourth on a solo home run from Jake Russo but did not score from that point on.
In the sixth, a walk for McRae and single from Torres put two runners on, then a two-RBI double from Tavarez allowed both to score, putting Wagner up 7-5. Tavarez moved to third on a wild pitch then came home on an RBI single from Mennella.
The game was delayed in the top of the seventh when New Haven second baseman Michael Christian was injured after colliding with a teammate while trying to field a hit from Mazzotta. EJ Ettinger entered at second base for the Chargers and Mazzotta was credited with a double.
McRae and Torres each walked again, forcing a New Haven pitching change, then another walk and RBI fielder's choice put the Seahawks up 10-5. With the bases loaded, Immel walked to push in run 11, then sophomore Jayden Alvarez added a two-RBI single to put the Wagner lead at 13-5 going to the middle of the seventh. The Seahawks scored five runs on two hits in the frame. An RBI walk for freshman Alex Kerr scored the final Wagner run of the day in the ninth.
Next up, Wagner heads to St. John's on Tuesday, March 31 for a 3 p.m. EDT matchup at Jack Kaiser Stadium. From there, the Seahawks travel to New Britain, Connecticut for their series against reigning NEC champion CCSU. Game one of that series will be Thursday, April 2 at 3 p.m. EDT. Games two and three will both feature 1 p.m. EDT start times.
