WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Wagner put up the tying run in the top of the ninth to bring the score to 8-8, but a pair of runs scored by New Haven gave the Chargers a 9-8 win on Saturday to secure the series over the Seahawks.
As steadily as Wagner has been able to score this season, New Haven was able to put up more early, scoring across each of the first four innings, while the Seahawks scored in the first, second and fourth before putting up their final run in the ninth.
Junior Joseph Mennella hit a three-run homer in the first to put Wagner ahead early, but the steady offensive output proved too much for the Seahawks to overcome. Mennella finished his day at 1-for-3 with three walks. Freshman Brendan McLoughlin and graduate Lukas Torres each finished with a pair of hits as Wagner's only hitters with multiple hits. Torres also walked twice. The Wagner lineup finished with nine walks on the day and just two strikeouts.
Sophomore William Grayson was a bright spot on the mound after the Chargers opened the game hitting well against starter Joseph Steventon. The redshirt sophomore gave up six runs on six hits before Grayson took over. Grayson, who threw 4.2 innings in relief, allowed just one run on four hits.
Once again getting an opposing starter out of the game early, New Haven starter Vincent Fusco went 2.0 innings and allowed five runs on three hits.
Wagner returns to Frank Vieira Field on Sunday, March 29 for a 1 p.m. EDT series finale.
