WEST HAVEN, Conn. — It took the Chargers ten innings to do it, but New Haven won the opener over Wagner with a 9-8 victory on Friday.
The Seahawks hit well, scoring their eight runs on 14 hits and working nine walks, but they left 16 runners stranded. Wagner scored across five innings, but a three-run eighth brought the Chargers back and they were able to walk off the tenth.
Graduate Lukas Torres led off for Wagner and finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of walks, scoring four runs. Batting second and third, respectively, sophomore Matt Sutera and junior Diego Tavarez each finished 2-of-4. Tavarez batted in three runs.
Eight Seahawks finished with a hit. Alongside the top three in the order, junior Dylan Immel and senior Nicholas Mazzotta each added a pair of hits as the other Wagner batters with multiple hits in the game. Senior Colin Trizuto, in his seventh start of the season, went 6.0 innings and threw 97 pitches, finishing with five runs — three earned — scored on nine hits.
Wagner got on board in the first when Immel was hit a pitch with the bases loaded, then added a pair of runs in the second on an RBI walk for Tavarez and RBI fielders' choice for Mennella. The Seahawks scored another pair in the fourth and fifth, then Tavarez pushed in Wagner's final run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Sophomore Frankie Nardo, entering to pitch in the ninth after junior Keith Davis encountered traffic in the eighth, so he takes the loss after issuing the RBI walk that pushed in New Haven's ninth run.
Next up, Wagner returns to Frank Vieira Field for a 1 p.m. EDT game on Saturday, March 29 to either determine the series or force a rubber game on Sunday.
