PISCATAWAY, N.J. — On the road for the team's first midweek game of the 2026 season, Wagner fell 8-5 to Rutgers on Tuesday.
The Seahawks put up a three-run burst in the second, then added a pair in the sixth but the Scarlet Knights scored across four innings and a four-run fifth was ultimately the big inning needed to take the win.
Freshman Quinn Finnegan got his second start for the Seahawks, going 3.2 innings and allowing three runs while facing 17 batters.
Back in the leadoff spot, graduate Lukas Torres had a 3-of-3 day with a double and a walk. Juniors Diego Tavarez and Dylan Immel, as well as sophomore Matt Sutera, were the only other Seahawks who logged a hit. The team finished with their five runs on six hits with three RBIs, two coming from Torres and one from Tavarez. Tavarez and junior Joseph Mennella each walked twice.
Returning to the mound for the first time this season, junior Keith Davis was effective in the inning he pitched, striking out one of the six batters he faced. Junior Tyler Vargas rounded out the game for Wagner, throwing the final 2.0 innings and allowing just one run on a pair of hits.
Next up, the Seahawks resume conference play with a road series at LIU, taking on the Sharks in Brookville, New York. Game one of the weekend, to be played Friday, March 13, is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT.
