BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Wagner scored the final runs in the game but did not have the offense for a win on Saturday, falling 15-4 in its opener at LIU.
In the first road conference game of 2026 for the Seahawks, a hard-hitting LIU lineup put up three high-scoring innings early in the game that Wagner could not overcome. Scoring bursts of two, seven and six across the first three innings kicked things off for the Sharks, while Wagner put up single runs in the second and third.
The Seahawks put up each of their four runs against LIU starter Nicholas Finarelli, who faced 26 batters, walking three and giving up all eight of Wagner's hits. For Wagner, the middle and bottom of the order were most effective, with juniors Diego Tavarez and Joseph Mennella each tallying a hit from the third and fourth spot in the order. Batters five through eight — junior Dylan Immel, senior Nicholas Mazzotta, redshirt junior Evan McRae and freshman Brendan McLoughlin — also added hits. McRae and Mazzotta had a pair each and Immel's lone hit was his eighth double of the season.
While Wagner was able to disperse its hitting across a majority of the lineup, only five Sharks recorded a hit and nine of their 12 came from three hitters. On the mound, freshman Chris Couser made his collegiate debut to close the game, the latest of a class of 12 freshmen to take the field for the Seahawks.
Next up, the Seahawks will play a Sunday doubleheader after Friday's game was pushed back due to unsatisfactory field conditions. The first game of the day will begin at noon, with game two following shortly after.
