COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Seahawks were able to score 10 runs for the second time this season, logging a season-high 12 hits and nine RBIs before falling 15-10 to Maryland.
It was a massive effort from junior Diego Tavarez, who finished 3-of-4 with four RBIs, three runs and a walk. A pair of Tavarez's hits were doubles. Graduate Lukas Torres had the first triple of the season to open the first inning. He finished the day 2-of-5 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. He was one of three Seahawks to finish with a multi-hit game.
Freshman Quinn Finnegan got the nod for what was his first collegiate start. The Efland, North Carolina native allowed two hits and struck out one Terrapin in his second outing of the season. After game one of the weekend where the Seahawks were able to use just three arms, Sunday's bullpen game featured outings from seven total Seahawks. Graduate Vincent Corso had the big performance of the day, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out two of the eight batters he faced.
Senior Nicholas Mazzotta pushed Torres in from third to put Wagner on the board first with a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the frame, then the Terrapins took the lead in the bottom of the second. In the third, back-to-back singles from junior Joseph Mennella and and junior Omar Carreras combined with a walk to sophomore Matt Sutera to load the bases for Tavarez, who sent a two-RBI single to right field to put Wagner at three runs. A groundout on the next at-bat allowed Sutera to score from third and push the run total to four.
Generating more offense in the fifth, walks to Mennella and Carreras were followed by a Sutera single to load the bases, then Tavarez added an RBI double to his total. Sutera ended up on third, where he scored on a passed ball after Maryland made a pitching change. Tavarez advanced to third on the passed ball, scoring on a pinch-hit single from junior Dylan Immel.
The Seahawks were kept off the board after those four runs scored, coming to life in the ninth after Corso and junior Tyler Vargas combined to hold the Terrapins to just one run. Tavarez doubled for his third hit of the day, pushed to third on a single from sophomore Jayden Alvarez. An RBI single from sophomore Christian Knight scored Tavarez for the ninth run of the game, then Torres doubled for the final hit of the game, scoring Alvarez.
The team's 10 runs came via nine RBIs and eight walks. The nine RBIs mark another season high for the Seahawks.
Next up, the Seahawks open at home with the start of conference play, hosting FDU at Kean University's Jim Hynes '63 Stadium in Union, New Jersey. First pitch for game one is schedule for 1 p.m. EST on Friday, March 6.
