Swimming and Diving Falls Just Short of Team Championship; Earns 26 Total Medals

GENEVA, Ohio — The Wagner Swimming and Diving teams wrapped up the four-day long NEC Championships on Friday. The men's team finished in second place in the final team standings, while the women's team finished third.

The Seahawks added nine medals to their total count on the final day of competition, three of each color. It started when sophomore Ben McLaughlin placed 2nd in the men's 1650-yard freestyle with a 16:12.98 time. Not too far behind him was freshman Karson Leavitt, who finished third with a 16:17.06 time, and became Wagner's first freshman of these championships to reach a podium.

Wagner finished another race by sending two swimmers to the podium, this time the men's 200-yard backstroke. Junior Nikko Carrillo placed 1st in the event (1:47.10), winning his first of two gold medals on the day. Sophomore Florian Schumich followed closely behind, finishing less than a second behind the winner (1:47.58). 

Carrillo won his second gold medal in the 200-yard butterfly, as he topped the podium with a 1:48.50 time. 
 

On the women's side, sophomore Mia Goodale continued her prolific championships with a bronze medal in the women's 100-yard freestyle (50.54). Goodale won seven medals throughout the four days, including two gold, one silver and four bronze. Fellow sophomore Gaya Savran won the Seahawk's third gold medal of the night, and her first of the championships, by winning the women's 200-yard butterfly (2:03.11), almost two seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. 

Finally, to end the four-day meet, both teams grabbed a medal in the 400-yard Freestyle relays. Schumich joined juniors Max Wameling and Senan Noonan, and senior Ruben Van Gool in finished 2nd in the men's portion of the event with a 3:00.40 time. The women placed 3rd in their race, as Savran, Goodale, sophomore Lovisa Ramsten, and junior Brooke Woolfe finished with a 3:26.97.
 

Overall, the Seahawks earned 26 medals; six gold, eight silver, and 12 bronze.
