Four Track & Field Alums Finish Top 50 in Staten Island Half Marathon

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Four alumni from the Wagner track & field program finished in the top 50 of the Staten Island half marathon on October 11.

The 13.1 mile race begins and ends at the St. George terminal for the Staten Island ferry and runners in 2026 battled pouring rain throughout the day. The race, organized by the New York Road Runners, is the final leg of the group's Five-Borough series that has runners competing in Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn.

Justin Morris, a Wagner graduate in May 2026, took fifth place with a 1:07.46 time. The former Seahawk posted a 5:11 pace. Behind Morris were Michael Ryan and Johnny Sokoll, a pair of distance runners who graduated in 2025. Ryan finished 15th, completing the course with a 1:10.11 time. Just behind at a 5:27 pace, Sokoll finished 23rd with a 1:11.19 time.

In 28th place was Dominic Palermo, named NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year after competing in the 2024-2025 season as a graduate with the Seahawks. Palermo finished in 1:12.01 with a 5:30 mile pace.

A total of 10,400 completed the race in the rain as the final tuneup before the New York City Marathon is held on Sunday, Nov. 1, beginning at Fort Wadsworth under the Verazzano-Narrows Bridge.
