Bridgewater, N.J. — Recognized for their performances in Wagner's series win over CCSU, graduate Lukas Torres and freshman Matt Sutera were named Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Torres is a steady presence at the top of the Wagner order and that reliability was a major factor in the Seahawks taking the series over CCSU over the weekend. Sutera kicked off the scoring for the Seahawks in game one, but Torres kept the line going and added an RBI single of his own, advancing to second on an error, which gave Wagner a 2-1 lead that was all it ultimately needed to win the game. Torres finished game one 3-of-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. In game two, Torres kept the production up with a 3-of-4 game where he walked once and accounted for two of three RBIs for Wagner. His big hit was a two-RBI double that put him at third after an error, a play that put the Seahawks ahead with a 3-0 lead in the second that allowed them to stay ahead until the seventh inning. In Saturday's rubber game, Torres was 1-of-5 with an RBI, a huge RBI single through the left side that allowed Sutera to score and make it a 4-3 lead.
Sutera started off Wagner's scoring with an RBI single in the third, tying the same at 1-1. He also scored a run himself in what was an eight-run third for the Seahawks. He pushed in another run in the sixth, an RBI single to make it a 14-1 Wagner lead. Sutera finished game one a perfect 4-of-4 at the place, with two runs scored and two RBIs. Sutera was quieted in game two with the efficiency of Vincent Borghese, but came back in game three with a 2-of-3 performance where he walked, scored a run and added an RBI. He once again put Wagner on the board to kick things off, this time with a two-RBI double in the second to bring Wagner within one. He scored two plays later on an RBI single from Torres to take a 4-3 lead.
Joining Torres and Sutera in the NEC honors this week is senior Jake Toporek, starting pitcher for game one of the series who went all seven innings for a complete game, run-rule victory over the Blue Devils.
Next up, Wagner hits the road for its next NEC series, a weekend at FDU. Game one is scheduled for Friday, May 9 at 3 p.m. EST.
