Baseball Drops Rescheduled Game Three, Loses Series Against Indiana State

Box Score

Gastonia, N.C. — In a game where Indiana State's offense was too much to overcome, Wagner dropped game three of its opening series to go 1-2 on the weekend.

The Sycamore bats got hot early in game two, which was a sign of what was to come in the series' final game. Ultimately winning 36-6, Indiana State wins the opening series while Wagner takes game one of the three.

While the Sycamores made their offensive push early in the game, the Seahawks kept strong at the plate and scored all of their six runs in the last six innings of the game, including three in the final two innings.

It was the most productive game of the series for Wagner at the plate, with the team logging 12 hits. Four players had a multi-hit game. The top of the order made their presence known in the batters' box, with graduate Lukas Torres, junior Nicholas Mazzotta and sophomore Diego Tavarez combining to go 5-of-11.

Senior Bryce Phelps was the biggest performer of the weekend, going 3-of-4 at the plate and contributing two runs. He is batting .727 coming out of opening weekend. Sophomore Connor Roche had a big day at third, logging two hits to join Mazzotta and Tavarez as the Seahawks with multiple base knocks on Sunday.

Starting pitcher Colin Trizuto takes the loss to sit at 0-1 on the season after Indiana State jumped out to an early lead in the 2.0 innings he pitched. Trizuto gave up five runs on four hits, striking out two but giving up four extra-base hits.

The bullpen matched the late game-effort from its offense, with sophomore Christopher Collina, senior Nate Garcia and senior Zach Gorman combining for zero runs in the final 3.1 innings.

Next weekend, Wagner will have its first home series of the season, hosting Merrimack at SIUH Community Park beginning February 21 at 3 p.m. EST.
