Women’s Basketball Hosts Central Connecticut On Saturday

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's basketball team will welcome Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon, tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

Last Time Out
Wagner dropped its third consecutive Northeast Conference (NEC) contest as the Seahawks fell to Sacred Heart, 83-63 on Sunday, January 21.

Junior Rakisha Ballinger led the way offensively with 14 points on 6-12 shooting. Ballinger also tallied three rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Freshman Drew Jordon poured in a career-high 15 points on 4-6 shooting from the field, the freshman also shot 7-11 from the free-throw line. Along with 15 points, Jordon brought in four rebounds.

Defensive DNA
Wagner ranks 46th in the nation and first in the NEC with 19.53 forced turnovers per contest. The Seahawks also rank 68th nationally with 9.7 steals per game.

Wagner's 2.38 steals per game ranks first in the NEC while Rakisha Ballinger's 2.38 steals per game ranks 54th in the nation.

Stealing History
Wagner tallied a program-best 30 steals in its final non-conference contest against Saint Elizabeth on December 30, a record that stood since Wagner tallied 22 against Mount St. Mary's on February 9, 1983.

Along with the 30 steals as a team, Rakisha Ballinger tallied 12 steals, a single game program record. Ballinger's 12 steals is the highest steal total in a game this season across the country. Wagner's 30 steals as a team is tied for the fifth-most in a game this season.

Ballinger broke a record that stood since 1987 as Shawn Martin tallied 11 steals against Hartford on December 28, 1987.

Newcomers Making An Impact
Junior Semie Brar continues to lead the Seahawks in scoring with 10.4 points per contest. Brar has eclipsed 20 points on three separate occasions this season after pouring in a career-high 26 points against Iona on November 27.

Along with Brar, graduate student Taleah Washington in three conference games is averaging a team-high 14.4 points per game. Washington has shot 8-13 from the three-point range and has shot 13-28 from the floor. Washington tallied a 29 point outburst against LIU in Wagner's lone NEC win on January 8. Washington's 29 points was the most for a Seahawk since Emilija Krista Grava scored 32 points on March 5, 2021.

Through conference play, freshman Kiera Edmonds has brought in 24 rebounds, 11 of which are offensive. Edmonds tallied a career-high 12 points at Stonehill to go along with seven rebounds. Edmonds' five field goals were also a career-high.

Freshman Drew Jordon recorded a career-high 15 points against Sacred Heart in the Seahawks' last contest. Jordon shot 4-6 from the field to go along with four rebounds. Jordon also shot 7-11 from the free-throw line. Seven free-throws made is a career-high. Jordon is shooting a team-best 79.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Since returning to the starting lineup, junior Paige Lyons has scored in double-digits in consecutive games for the second time this season.Lyons tallied 14 points against Merrimack before scoring 11 points against Sacred Heart. Lyons is shooting a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line in the last two games.

Scouting Central Connecticut
The Blue Devils enter their matc hup with Wagner with a 4-15 overall record and a 2-4 mark in NEC play.

After beginning NEC play 2-0, CCSU has dropped its last four contests. The Blue Devils' two conference victories came against Saint Francis U and Stonehill.

The Series
Wagner is 22-23 all-time against CCSU, the Seahawks are riding a seven-game winning streak and are 9-1 in the last 10 match ups.

Last Season Against Central Connecticut
Wagner earned two victories last season against CCSU.

The first game between the two sides was in New Britain, CT as Wagner earned a 57-52 win. The win brought Wagner to 6-0 in NEC play, the best start in program history throughout conference play.

In the second match up, Wagner earned a 62-52 win at the Spiro Sports Center. The win for Wagner snapped a five-game losing streak.

Wagner will travel to Syracuse, NY to take on Le Moyne on Thursday, February 1, tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
