TULCEA, Romania — Wagner College freshmen newcomers Ama Ofori Boampong and Sylia Vigka are set to represent the Netherlands and Greece, respectively, in the FIBA U18 Women's EuroBasket Division B Tournament from Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 9 in Tulcea, Romania.
For Boampong and the Netherlands, 'Group A' consists of Portugal, Azerbaijan, Romania, and Iceland.
Boampong and the Netherlands national squad start their tournament with a matchup against Portugal on Friday, July 31. Following the opener with Portugal, the Dutch take on Azerbaijan on Sunday, Aug. 2, Iceland on Tuesday, Aug. 4, and Romania on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
The Haarlem, Netherlands native joined the Seahawks roster back in January of this year. Boampong played for club 'Triple Threat' in her home country prior to coming to Grymes Hill.
For Vigka and the Greece national team, the roster joins Great Britain, North Macedonia, Denmark, and Slovakia to make up 'Group D'.
Vigka and company begin their tournament against Great Britain on Friday, July 31. Greece follows up their opener against North Macedonia on Saturday, August 1, followed by a Sunday, August meeting with Slovakia, before wrapping up group play against Denmark on Tuesday, August 4.
The Athens, Greece native joined Wagner's roster in late January of this year. Vigka played GS Esperides Kalliotheas in her home country before coming to Staten Island.
In the 20-team tournament, the top eight advance to the championship bracket and quarterfinals, while other teams enter 9th-16th place playoffs and lower-tier classification groups. Finalists earn promotion to the top-tier Division A for next summer.
