Late Surge Falls Short as Women’s Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale to LIU

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College women's basketball team fell to the LIU Sharks by a score of 79-71 in the Seahawks' 2025-26 regular season finale at the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday night.

Prior to the game, one graduate student and seven academic seniors — graduate student Raneem Elbarky, senior Maria Doreste, senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya, senior Hawa Balde-Camara, senior Malia Mpondo, senior Angelie Ricard, redshirt junior Priscila Varela, and redshirt junior Klea Kaci — were honored for their time with the program 

The Seahawks and Sharks battled throughout a back-and-forth first quarter that saw seven lead changes during the frame. The Seahawks (13-16, 9-9 NEC) were led by junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor who scored six points and grabbed four rebounds while sophomore Keana Foz added five points. 

LIU outscored Wagner 10-6 in points in the paint during the first quarter. 

The Sharks extended their lead to 12 at the conclusion of the first half. LIU outscored Wagner 10-4 in the paint in the second quarter to lead 20-10 in the category. Throughout the second frame, the Seahawks shot 2-13 (15.4%) from the floor while the Sharks shot 7-13 (53.8%) during that same stretch.

At the half, LIU led 40-28. The Seahawks' offense was led by Modesayor who had seven points while Foz and graduate student Raneem Elbarky both scored six points.

The Sharks started the third quarter on a 16-4 run during the first six minutes of the quarter. The Seahawks responded with their own 25-7 run over the next six minutes to trail by only six with eight minutes remaining in the game. 

Wagner outscored LIU 22-17 in the fourth and dominated the paint, 16-4. However, LIU finished the game on a 16-14 advantage after the Seahawks made it a six-point contest.

In the end, LIU prevailed at Spiro by a score of 79-71.

Modesayor led the Seahawks with 15 points and 10 rebounds in 18:56 of game action. Senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half and ended the contest with six rebounds and four steals. Elbarky finished the game with 11 points off the bench. 

Next up, the fourth-seeded Seahawks welcome the fifth-seeded Le Moyne Dolphins to Grymes Hill for a 7 p.m. tip-off in the NEC Quarterfinal on Monday, March 9. 

Monday's game will be the Wagner College women's basketball program's first home playoff game since 2021-22 — Head Coach Terrell Coburn's first season at the helm.
