Women’s Basketball Travels To St. Francis Brooklyn For NEC Quarterfinal

Brooklyn, NY – The #5 Wagner College women's basketball team will travel to the #4 St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday for the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament quarterfinal. Tip-off between the Seahawks and Terriers is set for 7:00 pm.

Wagner In The NEC Tournament
Wagner has a 16-21 record in the NEC Tournament as this is Wagner's 25th NEC Tournament appearance.

The Seahawks are seeking its first NEC crown since 1988-89, a season when Wagner won its lone regular season and tournament title. The Green & White have ap­peared in the NEC title game five times back in 2021, 2000, 1998, 1991 and 1989.

As the #5 seed, Wagner is 2-0 as they earned wins in 1992 and 2002. The Seahawks hold a 5-21 record on the road in the NEC Tournament.

The Seahawks have lost eight consecutive road playoff games and haven't earned a playoff road victory since 2000 when they won two road games.

Wagner holds a 9-12 record in the quarterfinals. The Seahawks defeated LIU 66-55 last season in the quarterfinals for head coach Terrell Coburn's first NEC Tournament victory. The win over LIU snapped a six-game quarterfinal losing streak. The Seahawks hold a 1-1 record in NEC Tournament play under second-year head coach Terrell Coburn.

Wagner And St. Francis Brooklyn Postseason History
This is the second time the Seahawks and Terriers will face off in the NEC tourna­ment.

The teams faced off in Wagner's first-ever NEC Tour­nament contest back in 1987, the #4 Terriers defeated the #5 Seahawks 55-54.

Season Series Against The Terriers
The Terriers snapped Wagner's six-game winning streak to open NEC play with a 61-59 win at the Pratt Institute on January 26. Fifth year senior Kem Nwabudu notched 18 points and five rebounds for Wagner in the contest.

The Terriers came into the Spiro Sports Center on February 9 and left with an 82-74 victory. Redshirt junior Alex Cowan notched a career-high 26 points for Wagner as sophomore Rakisha Ballinger chipped in 12 points and six rebounds for the Green & White. Alyssa Fisher and Tyra Myers notched 30 points each against Wagner in the second meeting between the two sides.

NEC Bracket
The 2023 NEC Tournament will go through Teaneck, NJ as FDU earned its second con­secutive regular season crown. The Knights will welcome the CCSU Blue Dev­ils as the #2 seeded Sacred Heart Pioneers will welcome the #7 LIU Sharks. The #3 seed Merrimack Warriors will play host to #6 Saint Francis U.

Alex Cowan Continues To Impress
Alex Cowan has earned NEC Prime Performer eight times this season, including four con­secutive honors to end the regular season.

The Bowie, MD native finished the regular season fifth in the NEC with 14.0 points per contest.

More Than A Floor General
For the second straight season, graduate student Zhaneia Thybulle ended the regular season leading the league in assists. The Elmont, NY native averaged 4.2 assists to wrap up the season.

Thybulle finished the regular season ranked 91st in the nation in assists per game.

NEC Ranks
Wagner wrapped up the regular season second in the league with 63.2 points per game and second with a 40.0 field goal percentage. The Green & White also finished second in the league with 9.44 steals per game and first with a +5.63 turnover margin.

Defensive DNA
Wagner wrapped up the regular season 15th in the nation with a +5.63 turnover margin and 12th in the nation with 20.70 turnovers forced per contest.

Scouting St. Francis Brooklyn
The Terriers enter the NEC Tournament with a 10-18 record and a 9-7 mark in NEC play. In its last contest, the Terriers fell to Merrimack, 61-60 to earn the #4 seed in the NEC Tournament.

Alyssa Fisher finished the season ranked third in the NEC with 16.6 points per game as Sarah Brandoma finished the regular season ranked fifth with 7.1 rebounds per contest.

What's Next
The winner of Monday's quarterfinal matchup will play in the semifinals on Thursday, March 9.
