Fairfield, CT – The Wagner College women's basketball team will close out the regular season on Thursday, when they Seahawks travel to Sacred Heart. Tip-off between the Seahawks and Pioneers is set for 7:00 pm.
Last Time Out
Wagner earned a 72-57 win over Saint Francis U at the Spiro Sports Center on February 25.
Redshirt junior
Alex Cowan led all Wagner scorers with 17 points and nine rebounds while graduate student
Zhaneia Thybulle netted 14 points and four assists on 7-11 shooting from the field.
Junior
Julia Fabozzi also chipped in 12 points and four rebounds as senior
Drayah Heyward scored nine points to go along with four rebounds and six assists.
Postseason Picture
With one game remaining in the regular season, Fairleigh Dickinson has clinched the regular season title and the top overall seed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament. Sacred Heart has claimed the second spot.
Spots 3-5 are still up for grabs as Merrimack, St. Francis Brooklyn and Wagner are fighting for spots. However, Wagner can only claim the four or five seed in the bracket. Last season, the Seahawks entered the NEC Tournament as the four seed.
The Seahawks have the ability to still host a quarterfinal matchup with a win over Sacred Heart and a Merrimack loss against St. Francis Brooklyn.
Alex Cowan Continues To Impress
Alex Cowan is averaging 15.4 points per game through conference play and is averaging 13.8 points per game throughout this season.
The Bowie, MD native has notched over 20 points in six games this season.
Cowan has scored in double figures in 19 out of 26 games this season as her 13.8 points per game ranks fifth in the NEC.
More Than A Floor General
Returning as last season's NEC assist leader,
Zhaneia Thybulle has returned to lead the conference with 4.2 assists per contest.
The Elmont, NY native is also averaging double figures this season with 11.0 points per game which is good for 13th in the circuit.
Thybulle is averaging 12.2 points per game through conference play this season.
Thybulle notched the NEC's first triple-double against LIU on February 11.
The triple-double was the third in program history and the first for an NEC performer since 2021. Thybulle has registered five or more assists 10 times this season.
Julia Fabozzi's Big Week
In two games last week,
Julia Fabozzi averaged 16 points and 4.5 rebounds. Fabozzi's efforts were rewarded with a NEC Prime Performer, her second of the season.
Defensive DNA
Wagner's +5.46 turnover margin is ranked 17th in NCAA Division I along with the team's 20.65 forced turnovers per game 15th in the NCAA.
Wagner's 9.35 steals per game is good for 57th in the nation.
Season Series
The Pioneers earned a 65-47 win at the Spiro Sports Center on February 2.
Zhaneia Thybulle was the lone Seahawk to score in double figures with 10 points to go along with nine rebounds. Fifth year senior
Kem Nwabudu netted nine points for Wagner in the first matchup with Sacred Heart.
Scouting Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart welcomes Wagner with a 13-12 record and an 11-4 mark in NEC contests this season. The Pioneers are 8-6 at the William H Pitt Center and have won four consecutive games at home including seven out of eight.
The Pioneers are 6-1 at home throughout conference play this season.
Sacred Heart is led by Freshman Ny'Ceara Pryor, the Baltimore, MD native has earned NEC Rookie of the Week 12 times this season.
Pryor leads the NEC with 17.9 points per game, 4.07 steals per game and is second with 3.9 assists per game.
