Boston, MA - Former Wagner baseball pitcher Andrew Bailey has struck a deal with the Boston Red Sox to become the organization's new pitching coach, the club announced on Tuesday.
Bailey most recently served as the pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants for the past four seasons. Prior to his stint in the Bay Area, Bailey spent the 2019 season as the bullpen coach for the Los Angeles Angels.
The Vorhees, NJ, native made 46 appearances for the Seahawks from 2003 to 2006. During his tenure on Grymes Hill, Bailey tallied 237 strikeouts, the second most all-time in program history. In 2006, Bailey became the highest drafted player in Wagner history when he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the sixth round of the MLB Draft.
Bailey made his major league debut in 2009 with Oakland, earning his first of two All-Star appearances on his way to AL Rookie of the Year. He became the second former Seahawk to win Rookie of the Year after Curt Blefary in 1965 with the Baltimore Orioles.Â
After three years with the Athletics, Bailey had stints with the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies and Angels before calling it a career in 2018. Across 265 appearances out of the bullpen, the former Wagner standout finished his major league career with a 3.12 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 9.1 K/9.
Bailey ventured into coaching and saw immediate results in his two stops. With the Angels in 2019, the team's bullpen accumulated the third most strikeouts in the majors. In San Francisco, Bailey oversaw the development of Kevin Gausman and Logan Webb, among other pitchers in the organization.
Bailey now joins the Red Sox, a team in which he spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons playing with. He will look to help guide the Red Sox back to the postseason after finishing the 2023 season with a 78-84 record.
