Sara Nelson of the Wagner College field hockey team tallied a game-winning overtime goal to lift Wagner over LIU, 2-1.
In a scoreless first quarter, both teams failed to register a shot. The Seahawks were able to generate one penalty corner while holding LIU to zero.
Junior Emma Lofstedt got Wagner on the board 4:03 into the second quarter on a penalty stroke goal. The Seahawks were able to hold onto the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Seahawks out shot the Sharks 3-2 as freshman goalkeeper Puck Schenk stopped two shots to keep the Sharks off the scoreboard heading into the fourth quarter.
LIU tied the game at one 3:03 into the fourth quarter. Wagner was held without a shot in the fourth quarter as the two teams went to overtime knotted at one. The contest was Wagner's first overtime contest of the 2023 season.
In the first overtime period, Puck Schenk kept the Seahawks alive with two saves as the two teams advanced to a second overtime period.
Freshman Charlotte Muller found graduate student Sara Nelson who was able to find the back of the net 2:47 into the second overtime period.
The win brings the Green & White to 2-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play with two regular season games remaining.
The Seahawks will host Rider on Sunday, October 22 at 12:00 pm.
