STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College field hockey team defeated conference rival LIU by a score of 6-0 on Thursday morning at the Field Hockey Complex.
The Seahawks (3-6, 2-0 NEC) were led by senior forward Floortje Leunisse scoring her second hat-trick of the season. The Breda, Netherlands native scored the two goals in the first half. Senior Victoria Gonzalez-Lopez added a penalty stroke just after halftime to make it a 3-0 game.
Later in the second half, freshman Gabrielle Childs scored her second goal of her collegiate career before Leunisse and graduate student Feli Herrero-Martel tallied goals to prevail, 6-0, over the Sharks.
Wagner's defense held LIU (0-8, 0-2 NEC) to zero penalty corner opportunities, while earning 11 corners on the other end of the field. Offensively, the Seahawks took 29 shots with 20 on target; meanwhile, all three of LIU's attempts were on target.
Senior Mia DiGenova saved three shots during her sixty minutes in goal. The King of Prussia, Pennsylvania native earned her first shutout as a member of the Wagner College field hockey program.
With the win, the Seahawks received their third consecutive win. Wagner climbs to 2-0 in the NEC standings and has outscored conference opponents, 9-0.
Next up, the Green & White heads to NEC newcomer Quinnipiac for a 1:00 p.m. start on Friday, Oct. 2 in Hamden, Connecticut.
