Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's lacrosse program led by fifth year head coach
Bill McCutcheon welcomes 18 newcomers for the upcoming 2023 season.
"We are thrilled that our incoming class is finally on campus and participating with our team," said McCutcheon. "It is a large group of 15 guys and we covered a lot of different areas of the country as we addressed our needs. This group has been resilient through the recruiting process having been affected greatly and I think they have come to Wagner ready to compete and hungry to win."
The program added 15 freshmen and three transfers to a team that will enter its first season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
"We were also lucky to find 3 great additions in the transfer portal," McCutcheon added. We expect CJ Sweitzer, Xander Baugess and Jack Matuszewski to compete and help our team immediately, we brought in a group of great young men who possess physical skills and leadership qualities that can make our team better."
Transfers
Xander Bauguess – Defense – Port Deposit, MD (Hofstra)
Was an All-American, First-Team All-State and First Team All-Conference his senior year at Sanford High School in Delaware. He was also named Third Team All-State and First Team All-Conference his sophomore year.
Jack Matuszewski – Defense – Windham, NH (Connecticut College)
Was a member of the National Honors Society and State Champion at Bishop Guertin High School. Played club lacrosse for NH Tomahawks and won a HS Lacrosse state championship at Bishop Guertin. Was a 2022 Spring NESCAC All-Academic selection.
CJ Sweitzer – Midfield – Hatfield, PA (Bryant)
Appeared in 11 games in three seasons at Bryant and scored two goals and dished out one assist. Was team captain senior year at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Recorded 200 points in HS Lacrosse and also played basketball where he was a two-time captain.
Freshmen
Chase Alber – Midfield – Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School – Fanwood, NJ
2021 First Team All-State, All-Division, and All-County. As a junior in HS was a First Team All-State Group 3, First Team All-County, and First Team All-Division selection. Played club for Leading Edge. Was a 2022 Group 3 State Champ and played for 2022 NJ HS Coach of the Year Nick Miceli.
Athan Barmer – Midfield - The John Carroll School – Abingdon, MD
Member of the football and lacrosse teams at the John Carroll School in Bel Air, MD… Also played on the BTC Super 22 Team and Team Maryland Crabowl.
Smith Callaghan – Attack – Woodberry Forrest School – Covington, LA
Posted 51 points junior year and 60 points senior year at Woodberry Forest School… Led the team in assists both junior and senior year… Led team in points junior year... Two-time First Team All-Central Virginia… Transferred from Western Albemarle after sophomore year… Grew up in Charlottesville, VA.
Joe DeRiso – Attack – The Hill Academy – Greensberg, PA
Member of the varsity lacrosse team at The Hill Academy in Caledon, Ontario (Canada).
Max Frissora – Attack – Cheshire Academy – Middlebury, CT
Captain of the lacrosse team his senior year at Cheshire Academy… All-League selection. Played club lacrosse with Team CT. Was an Apex 60 Showcase All Star and Go Fight Win Showcase All Star.
Issac Grossberg – Midfield – Westwood High School – Austin, TX
Academic All-District, helped to lead high school lacrosse team to back-to-back district championships… Was team captain and an outside linebacker for his 6A Texas high school football team outside linebacker.
Nico Kross – Defense – St. Joseph Regional High School – Fairfield, NJ
Four-year starter and two-year captain of the St. Joseph Regional High School lacrosse team… Was named defensive MVP, First Team All-Gil Gibbs Division, First Team All-Bergen County, First Team All-North Jersey, FIrst Team All-Non-Public and made the NJ All-State Team… Totaled 107 ground balls, 49 caused turnovers and seven goals in his senior year.
Oliver Leedale-Brown – Midfield – William Penn Charter School – Philadelphia, PA
Played club lacrosse for Team 11. Dual sport athlete in High School. Ran Track & Field: 400m, 800m, and relays.
Tristan McMahon – Defense – Commack High School – Commack, NY
Four-year varsity member of the Commack High School lacrosse team… Two-time All-County… Two-time All-Division… Suffolk County Division I long stick midfielder of the year.
Jake Mitchell – Attack – Christian Brothers College High School – St. Louis, MO
Was President of Student Leadership Council, Honors society, and colonial cadet leadership award Christian Brothers College High School...Two-time All-State selection… Two-time All-Conference selection… Two-time Academic All-American.
Drew Pemrick – Defense – Christian Brothers Academy – Saratoga Springs, NY
Four-year varsity starter at Christian Brothers Academy Albany. All-Section Team 2021-22… Captain of the team in 2021-2022... Led the Suburban Council in caused turnovers during the 2021-2022 season.
Myles Pratt – Midfield – The Westtown School – Baltimore, MD
Three-year varsity lacrosse player for The Westtown School… Played freshman year at Mt. St. Joseph in Maryland before being recruited to a boarding school named Westtown to finish high school.
Vincent Santelia – Defense – Horace Greeley High School – Chappaqua, NY
A three high school sport athlete at Horace Greeley on the lacrosse, wrestling, and football teams.
Diesel Schraufnagel – Midfield – The Westtown School – Madison, WI
Dean's List member at The Westtown School while achieving high academic honors.
Rudy Zarate – Goalie – Saint Mary's Hall – San Antonio, TX
First ever Division I goalie to come out of Saint Mary's Hall. Played club for Stickstar and Texas United. Was an Apex National Fall Showcase All Star. Was First Team TAPPS All-District 5 Offensive Lineman (he played 6 man in Texas).
