Back-To-Back: Men's Outdoor Track & Field Repeats As NEC Champions

Emmitsburg, MD - The Wagner men's outdoor track & field team held a slim five-point lead heading into the final event of the 2022 Northeast Conference (NEC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, with the defending champions showing that they were up to the task, as the Seahawks captured the program's second straight outdoor title on Sunday afternoon.

The Green & White, who recorded 152 team points, edged out the host, Mount St. Mary's, to collect the fourth straight track and field title, having previously won the 2021 Indoor, 2021 Outdoor, and 2002 Indoor crowns.

The Mountaineers, who tallied 141 points, finished 30 points better than third-place Central Connecticut. Fairleigh Dickinson (89), LIU (88.5), and Saint Francis U (72) placed fourth through sixth. Bryant (65.5), Merrimack (46), St. Francis Brooklyn (29), and Sacred Heart (24) wrapped up the ten-team field.

The Seahawks trailed in the 4x400m relay before veteran Seahawk, Will Cuthbertson, grabbed the baton and completely changed Wagner's fortune, as he was able to outsprint the field and hand it off to Thomas Corel, who claimed the win and the title for Wagner.

The win was Wagner's fifth gold medal of the day and their sixth overall of the championship.

The Seahawks and Mountaineers traded spots for the majority of the day, with Mount St. Mary's leading heading into the 5,000m before the Green & White had two finish among the top-three, as Jean Uminski (14:49.14) and Robert Guidicipietro (14:53.98) claimed the final two spots on the 5,000m podium.

Anthony Bentivegna added four points to the Seahawks' total with a mark of 14:58.80 while Dominic Palermo finished eighth in 15:19.73.

Cuthbertson broke the tape in the 1,500 to place first with a time of 3:52.51 while Jason Marchese put the Seahawks in a good spot, earning ten points after claiming the 400H title with a time of 52.86, which was also good for a spot at the upcoming IC4A's.

For Cuthbertson, his time met the IC4A standards for the event. Michael Hubert rounded out the field of eight with a time of 4:02.38.

Wagner's day on the track started in the 3,000 Steeplechase, as Palermo turned in an IC4A qualifying time of 9:13.03 to place second overall and collect eight points. Teammate Yannik Gerland garnered five points after a fourth-place showing, clocking in with a time of 9:26.67.

The 4x100 relay team of Ryan Lane, Joshua Cadet, Cyril Babcanec, and Logan Murphey also qualified for IC4A's after a fourth-place time of 42.17.

Wagner collected 11 points in the 400m as Corel took second overall in the 400m with an IC4A time of 48.01 while teammate Joshua Cadet checked in at 49.23.
