Staten Island, NY – After 29 years of dedicated service,
Joe Stasi has officially announced he is stepping down as the head coach of Wagner College's cross country and track & field programs, effective Monday afternoon. Stasi will also be stepping down from his role as Director of the Seahawks' triathlon program.
"I want to thank the Wagner administration over the years—especially Walt Hameline and Brendan Fahey—for their unwavering support and belief in our programs," said Stasi. "None of this success would have been possible without their commitment. I'm also incredibly grateful to the student-athletes, assistant coaches, and support staff I've had the honor to work alongside. I've been blessed to coach not only talented athletes, but exceptional people. While I'm unsure of what the future holds—whether it's continuing in coaching or pursuing new passions—I know it's the right time to move on. Wagner has been a special place for me."
During his storied tenure on Grymes Hill, Stasi led the Seahawks to 12 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, including three men's cross country titles (2019, 2020-21, 2022), four men's indoor track & field titles (2020, 2022–2024), three men's outdoor titles (2021–23), and both the women's indoor and outdoor championships in 2025. Under his leadership, Wagner shattered over 110 school records, placed more than 250 student-athletes on All-NEC teams and had 13 student-athletes be named the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
"We are incredibly thankful for Joe's leadership and lasting impact on our programs and student-athletes," said Athletic Director Brendan Fahey. "From the moment he arrived nearly three decades ago, Joe provided stability and built a championship culture. He is a remarkable coach and even better person, and we wish him nothing but success in his next chapter."
A lifelong Staten Island native, Stasi previously worked as an Adaptive Physical Education teacher in the New York City Public School System until retiring in 2020. He is a 1988 graduate of Kean College and holds master's degrees in Physical Education from Nova University (1991) and Special Education from Wagner College (1999). He is an alumnus of New Dorp High School and began his coaching career at Monsignor Farrell High School from 1987 to 1990.
A national search for Stasi's successor will begin immediately.
