Somerset, NJ - Wagner baseball freshman
Frankie Wright has been named Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
For Wright, it is the first NEC accolade of his Wagner career.
The Egg Harbor Township, NJ native earned his team-leading sixth win of the season on Friday afternoon, going six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three in powering the Seahawks to an 11-3 series-opening win over Mount St. Mary's at ShoreTown Ballpark. Wright stifled the Mount's bats to the tune of a .182 average.
The right-hander moved into a tie for 14th on the single-season Wagner wins list, joining former hurlers Danny Marsh (2017), Austin Goeke (2016 & 2017), Paul Mammino (2013), and Mike McTamney (2005), who each recorded six wins.
Additionally, Wright moves into a tie for ninth on the single-season games started list with 13, joining the likes of Marsh (2017), Goeke (2016), current Triple-A right-hander Mike Adams (2016), Matt Morris (2014), Ryan Casey (2013 & 2014), Joe Testa (2008), current San Francisco Giants pitching coach Andrew Bailey (2004), and Mike Forthofer (1999)
Wright's six victories ranks third among the league's pitchers, behind LIU's Joshua Loeschorn and Central Connecticut's Anthony Mozzicato (7). He also ranks among the top-ten in the NEC in ERA, innings pitched (61.2) and strikeouts (46).
In addition to Wright being named Rookie of the Week, three Seahawks were tabbed to the Prime Performer list:
Maimu Kobayashi,
Mike Ruggiero, and
Eli Shedd.
Kobayashi led the way for the Seahawks batting a robust .545 in the three games against the Mountaineers. The junior outfielder went 6-for-11 with four runs scored, two doubles and drove in four runs while posting a .727 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
Ruggiero was highly productive against the Mount, recording a team-high seven hits in 13 at-bats (.538) with two doubles while driving in five RBIs.
Shedd allowed one run over five innings of work in game one of Sunday's twin bill against the Mountaineers. The sophomore left-hander scatted four hits while walking three and striking out a career-best eight batters to pick up his second win of the season.
Wagner concludes their home slate this afternoon against St. John's on Senior Day at SIUH Community Park before closing out the 2022 season on the road at Bryant on May 19-21.
