Baseball Falls In Series Finale To FDU; 6-1; On Sunday Afternoon

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team dropped the series finale to the FDU Knights, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

The Seahawks (10-27; 7-8 NEC) were limited to just two hits on the afternoon. Maimu Kobayashi and Dante Faicchio recorded the lone hits on the day with Kobayashi producing the Green & White's only RBI in the contest.

Daniel Merkel (0-6) took the loss, lasting just two innings in giving up three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out a pair. Connor Hayden tossed three innings, giving up one unearned run on three hits. John LaPointe recorded four strikeouts despite giving up two runs on three hits in his three frames of work. Nick LePre worked a scoreless ninth inning, striking out a batter in throwing nine pitches.

For LePre, today's appearance marked a career milestone, as it was his 60th career appearance. LePre moved into a tie for tenth on the all-time Wagner career appearance list, joining former Seahawks Paul Mammino (2013-16) and Neil Abbatiello (2016-19). The Staten Island native's next appearance will move him into a tie for ninth with former Seahawk and current member of the Reading Fightin Phils, Mike Adams, as both will have 61 to their ledgers.

Tom Ruscitti powered the Knights (20-19; 12-3 NEC) offense with three hits and three runs while Luke Cantwell had two hits and drove in four of FDU's six RBIs. Ruscitti added an RBI as did Tommy Verga. Joey Kosowsky went seven innings in earning his fifth win of the season as he allowed just the one run on two hits while walking three and striking out five Seahawks. Ethan Rembish and Jake Simon combined for two shutout innings, three walks, and two strikeouts.

FDU scored three runs in the opening inning. Hunter D'Amato and George Rosales had back-to-back singles before Ruscitti doubled to right field scoring D'Amato for the first run of the game. With one out, Cantwell sent a double down the first baseline that plated both Rusciitti and Rosales, as the visitors took a 3-0 lead.

The Knights tacked on a run in the top of the fifth as Verga reached on a fielding error by Mike Ruggiero at short, which brought in Ruscitti. Wagner's lone run came in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Quinn Mimnaugh drew a seven-pitch walk before stealing second. Kobayashi worked the count even to 2-2 before ripping a single to right field, bringing in Mimnaugh.

After both teams went scoreless in the seventh, FDU added two more scores in the top of the seventh, taking a 6-1 lead. Rosales was hit by a pitch but David Melfi was able to throw him out trying to steal second.  Ruscitti singled to left before Joan Sosa struck out on six pitches. Cantwell worked the count to 2-0 before unloading a two-run home run to right field, as the Knights went ahead by five.

Wagner threatened in the bottom of the eighth as Ruggiero and Faicchio each drew one-out walks but Rembish was struck out both Griffin Selby and Lukas Torres, ending the eighth. LePre worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, giving the Seahawks a chance to get back in the bottom of the inning. Henry Martinez, pinch-hitting for DiMaggio Cazares, walked but was stranded as pinch-hitters AJ Vigliotti flew out to center and Garret Bugarin as he grounded out to short.

Wagner returns ShoreTown Ballpark in Lakewood, NJ on Tuesday afternoon as they will welcome Big East members, Villanova. First-pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
