Baseball Picks Up 8-1 Road Win At Saint Peter's On Wednesday

Jersey City, NJ - The Wagner baseball team scored seven of its eight runs over a three-span while limiting Saint Peter's to just five hits as the Seahawks completed the regular-season sweep of the Peacocks, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
 
Wagner (11-27) had four players have multi-hit games on the afternoon, as Maimu Kobayashi, Griffin Selby, Cody Bey, and David Melfi each finished with two hits while Selby, Dante Faicchio, and Quinn Mimnaugh drove in two RBIs apiece for the visitors on the afternoon. 
 
Brandon Demma made his first start of the season, throwing three innings, in which he only allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out a career-high five batters in picking up the win for the Seahawks. 
 
Zach Gorman, who came on in relief of Demma, match him with three innings but didn't allow a run while giving up just two hits, a walk, and striking out a pair. Nick DeCarlo went threw two scoreless frames, issuing just two walks and striking out batters. Michael Cunningham preserved the victory, throwing a scoreless ninth while striking out two batters. 
 
Jack Gannon was tagged with the loss for Saint Peter's (6-31), giving up seven runs on eight hits in his 3.2 innings of work. Christian Coombes allowed one run on two over his 2.1 innings in relief of Gannon. 
 
Michael Bonaccorso and Robert Black III combined to throw the final three innings, giving up just two hits, two walks, and posting five strikeouts with Bonaccorso striking out three. 
 
Demma started his afternoon with back-to-back strikeouts of Abbatine and Jensen before getting Haney to pop out to Kobayashi in centerfield. 
 
 
Selby led off the Wagner second with a double to left field before moving to third on a Bey single to center. The first run of the contest scored by the visitors came on an RBI grounder to short off the bat of Mimnaugh, as Selby crossed the plate, giving Wagner a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Melfi, singled to left, scoring Bey as the Seahawks doubled its advantage.
 
 
Saint Peter's responded with one in the bottom of the inning, as Cardone connected on a one-out solo home run, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1. 
 
The Green & White tacked on four runs on four hits in the top of the third as Wagner built a 6-1 lead. Kobayashi doubled to center before Ruggiero drew a walk, giving the Seahawks a pair of runners on base. 
 
With one out in the frame, Selby ripped a two-run double to right, scoring both Kobayashi and Ruggiero, as the Seahawks went ahead 4-1. Torres brought in Selby in the next at-bat on a double to right, making it 5-1. Mimnaugh capped the big inning with a triple to right field, bringing in Torres to make it 6-1. 
 
 
 
 
Demma recorded his fifth strikeout of the contest in the bottom of the third, before loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single. Massicotte lined out to Selby, who was able to turn the unassisted, inning-ending double-play, as Wagner concluded the inning unscathed. 
 
The Wagner offense added a score in the top of the fourth, going up 7-1, as Faicchio recorded his team-leading 35th RBI of the season to left, bringing in Ruggiero and ending Gannon's afternoon. 
 
Following a scoreless fifth inning, Faicchio sent a towering fly to center field that was corralled by Abbatine for the second out, but Melfi was able to tag up and come into score the visitors' eighth and final run of the ballgame. 
 
 
Wagner resumes Northeast Conference (NEC) action this weekend, as the Seahawks return to ShoreTown Ballpark in Lakewood, NJ when they welcome the Merrimack College Warriors for a three-game set. 
 
Friday's series opener is set for 3:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on NEC Front Row as Joey Jarzynka will have the call.
