Baseball Drops Middle Game At USC On Saturday Afternoon

Daniel Merkel tosses five no-hit innings for the Seahawks in his third start of the year

Los Angeles, CA - Wagner starter Daniel Merkel tossed five no-hit innings and left with a 3-2 lead before USC scored 13 runs over the final three innings in defeating the Seahawks, 15-4, on Saturday afternoon.

Merkel gave up just two runs (one earned) while walking two and striking in his third outing in a Wagner (1-7) uniform. Ruben Del Castillo was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on two hits while walking two and striking out one.

At the plate, the Seahawks connected on a pair of solo home runs as David Melfi and Chino Hills native Henry Martinez went deep with Melfi finishing the day with two of Wagner's four RBIs on the afternoon.  Fifth-year Mike Ruggiero extended his RBI streak to four straight games, as he went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Adrian Colon-Rosado led the way for USC (8-2), going 2 for 3 with three runs scored, home run while driving in five RBI. Garret Guillemette also connected on a home run, as he produced three RBI.

Tyler Stromsborg went five innings in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out six batters. Carson Lambert picked up his first win of the season, after throwing three innings, allowing just one run on a hit while striking out four. Ethan Reed didn't allow a hit in the ninth, as he also recorded a strikeout for the Trojans.

USC got on the board first in the bottom of the second, as Johnny Olmstead lofted a fly ball to centerfield that brought in Colon-Rosado. Wagner wasted little time in tying the score. With one out in the third, Martinez was all over the first pitch he saw from Stromsborg, sending it over the right-field wall for his first home run of the season.

The Green & White claimed their first lead of the series in the top of the fourth. Dante Faicchio led off the frame with a double to left-center. Mateo Matthews drew a walk and Griffin Selby was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Down in the count 0-1, Melfi sent one to center as Faicchio alertly tagged up and pushed Wagner ahead of the Trojans, 2-1.

USC answered back on the sacrifice RBI off the bat of Colon-Rosado, tying the game at 2-2. Wagner added the go-ahead score in the top of the fifth. Maimu Kobayashi sent a one-out single up the middle and moved to second on the failed pickoff attempt by Stromsborg. With the count at 1-1, Ruggiero roped a single to right field that plated Kobayashi as the Seahawks regained the lead, 3-2. Merkel continued to stifle the Trojan bats, as he set down the order on just five pitches.

In the sixth, Lambert came on in relief of Stromsborg. On the first pitch of his outing, Melfi connected on a deep drive that cleared the left-field wall, as the Seahawks doubled up USC, 4-2.

The home team scored four times in the bottom of the inning in regained the lead. Colon-Rosdao took the first pitch he saw from reliever Ruben Del Castillo over the right-field fence that gave the Trojans a 5-4 advantage. Following a hit by a pitch to Guillemette, Nick Lopez doubled down the right-field line that brought in Guillemette, as the home team went up 6-4.

USC erupted for six runs in the bottom of the seventh in opening the game to 12-4. Trevor Halsema doubled to left field brought in two before Colon-Rosado followed with an RBI two-base hit before Guillemette cleared the bases with a three-run home run.  The Trojans tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, with two of the runs coming off RBI singles.

Wagner closes out its first-ever series USC tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM (PST) / 4:00 PM (EST).
