Seahawks Drop Series Finale At USC, 6-2, On Sunday Afternoon

Los Angeles, CA -  The Wagner baseball team dropped the final game of their three-game series with Pac-12 member, USC, falling to the Trojans, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon from Dedeaux Field. 

The Seahawks (1-8) produced eight hits on the day, two of which from Mike Ruggiero. Dante Faicchio went 1 for 4, with the lone hit going for his third home run of the season. Maimu Kobayashi, Mateo Matthews, Griffin Selby, Cody Bey, and Xavier Baker each had a hit in today's contest. For Baker, it marked his first collegiate hit. 
 

Connor Hayden (0-2) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) over 1.2 innings of work. He walked four batters and recorded a strikeout being Eric Crouse came on in relief. Crouse worked 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits while walking three and striking out three. Jake Toporek pitched the 1.2 frames, allowing a run on three hits but recorded a strikeout. 

Charlie Hurley earned his second win of the for the Trojans (9-2), throwing five scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out three. USC used four pitchers in relief of Hurley. D'Andre Smith and Adrian Colon-Rosado each had two hits with Colon-Rosado driving in two of USC's six runs. 

The Trojans drew two walks and a single by Tyresse Turner loaded the bases for Trevor Halsema, who reached on a fielding error by Bey at third that brought in the first run of the game.  Colon-Rosado reached on an infield single to first base that brought in the Trojans' second run of the contest. Garett Guillemete rolled into a 6-4-3 double play, but Turner was able to cross the plate to extend the lead by three.  

USC tacked on one more run in the second as Smith ripped a single to center field. 

Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Colon-Rosado sent a one-out single to short that allowed Turner to cross the plate, which made it 5-0. 
 
Wagner narrowed the gap with their first runs of the contest. With two outs, Ruggiero roped a double to left-center. Down in the count 0-1, Faicchio tied Ruggiero for the Wagner home run lead, as he connected on his third of the season, sending one clear over the left-field wall. 
 

 
Johnny Olmstead led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run that pushed the lead back to four. The Seahawks threatened in the ninth, as Selby led off the inning with a single, but David Melfi grounded into the 6-4-3 double play before Bey was called out looking at strike three to end the contest. 

Wagner returns to the East Coast and will be back in action on Tuesday, March 8, as the Seahawks are scheduled to travel to Big Ten members, Rutgers.
