Baseball Falls At East Tennessee State On Saturday Afternoon

Johnson City, TN - The Wagner baseball team dropped the middle game of its three-game series at East Tennessee State, 15-3, on Saturday afternoon. 

Wagner (1-4) was led on the afternoon by Mike Ruggiero, who clubbed a pair of home runs while finishing the contest 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Maimu Kobayashi, Cody Bey, and David Melfi also recorded a hit on the afternoon. Daniel Merkel (0-1) went four innings in which he gave up two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out a batter as he suffered his first loss of the season. 

Four Buccaneers finished with multi-hits in this afternoon's contest, led by Bryce Hodge, who went 3 for 4 with a run scored. Noah Webb and Garett Wallace each drove in four RBIs while Tommy Barth added two hits and drove in three for ETSU. Colby Stuart (2-0) tossed six innings in which he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking two batters. Andrew Ronne and Jackson McDavid combined to throw the final two innings for the Buccaneers.

ETSU scored the first run of the game as Ashton King led off the bottom of the inning with a single to right and came into score on a wild pitch in the first.  In the bottom of the second, Jackson Green walked and came into score on the Wallace single back to Merkel to make it 2-0. 

Wagner got on the board in the top of the fifth as Ruggiero worked the count even (2-2) and uncorked a home run that cleared the left-field wall.  The Buccaneers erupted in the bottom half of the inning, scored six times in taking an 8-1 lead. Wallace had the big hit of the frame, doubling down the left-field line that scored Barth and Green. 

With two outs in the sixth, Ruggiero unloaded on the first pitch that he saw from Stuart, connecting on his second home run of the game and season down the left-field line. Webb added three more runs on one swing, as he connected on a three-run home run off Jagger Duquette that made it 11-2. 

The Seahawks scored their final run in the top of the eighth, as Lukas Torres scored on a wild pitch by Ronne.  The home team tacked on four more runs, as Hanvey led off the frame with a home run and Barth sent a double down the left-field line that brought in two runs. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Wallace scored the fourth run of the inning, as ETSU evened the series at 1-1. 

Sunday concludes the three-game series from Thomas Stadium with the first-pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
