Baseball Falls In Series Finale At East Tennessee State

Johnson City, TN -  Fifth-year Mike Ruggiero homered for the second straight day but the Wagner baseball couldn't overcome an early deficit, dropping the final game of their series with East Tennessee State, 14-4, on Sunday afternoon. 
 
Ruggiero led Wagner (1-5) with two RBI. DiMaggio Cazares drove in the other RBI for the visitors this afternoon. 
 
Frankie Wright (0-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on five hits. He issued one walk and recorded two strikeouts. Jake Toporek went two innings in relief of Wright, as he allowed three runs on five hits while also recording his first collegiate strikeout back in the second inning. 
 
Five Buccaneers produced multi-hit games, led by three hits apiece from Noah Webb and Leo Jiminian. Jiminian led ETSU with three RBIs while scoring a team-leading four runs. 
 
Hunter Loyd (2-0) picked up the win as he went 5.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits without walking a batter and recording ten strikeouts. 
 
ETSU plated across four runs on five hits in the opening inning. Cam Norgren singled through the right side that plated home Jared Paladino. Webb then doubled down the right-field line to bring in Norgren made it 2-0. 
 
Jiminian followed up with a single through the right side that increased the lead to three before later in the frame Ryan McCarthy reached on an infield single to second base that brought in Jiminian. 
 
Following a scoreless second, the Buccaneers plated across three more runs that upped the lead to 7-0, as Jiminian sent a two-run home run over the left-field wall. Garett Wallace added an RBI single down the left-field line. 
 
Wagner got on the board in the fourth inning. Maimu Kobayashi was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second before moving up on the ground out by Lukas Torres. Kobayashi alertly came home on the wild pitch by Loyd. 
 
East Tennessee added four more runs in the bottom of the inning while tacking on an additional run in the fifth that made it 12-1. 
 
In the Seahawk seventh, David Melfi led off with a single to right-center. Koby McBroome made his Wagner debut by pinch-hitting for Ethan Valdez, as he moved Melfi into scoring position. 
 
Following a wild pitch that allowed Melfi to move to third, Cazares sent a hard-hit grounder to third that Melif was able to trout home for the Seahawks' third run of the game. 
 
East Tennessee State got their final runs of the ball game on a two-run homer to left-centerfield off the bat of Kyle Rachels. 
 
Nathan Hickman came on for the Buccaneers and the second pitch he threw to Ruggiero, the Smithtown, NY native connected for his third home run of the season. 
 
Wagner gears up for their upcoming trip to the West Coast, as the Seahawks will travel to Los Angeles, CA to tangle with Pac-12 members, USC, for a three-game series that is set to begin on March 4-6.
