Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Edged By College of Charleston, 3-1, On Saturday Afternoon

Charleston, SC - The Wagner College baseball team tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth until the College of Charleston scored a run in their half of the sixth and seventh in holding on for the 3-1 victory on Saturday.

Mike Ruggiero and newcomer Mateo Matthews had a hit for the Seahawks as Ruggiero recorded the tying RBI in the fifth inning.  Daniel Merkel, who made his first start in a Wagner uniform, went four innings, giving up one run on four hits as he walked three and struck out a batter.

Connor Hayden, who also made his Seahawk debut, was saddled with the loss despite throwing two innings in which he gave up two runs on three hits and walked one. The Aliso Viejo, CA native finished with three strikeouts. Veteran Seahawk, Mike Pirrotta, finished the game for the Green & White, striking out one and walking in his two innings of work.

Joseph Mershon and JT Marr had two hits for the Cougars while Mershon, Marr, and Tanner Steffy drove in an RBI. Daniel Brooks went five innings, giving up a run on two hits while walking one and striking out six but did not factor into the decision. William Privette earned the victory after tossing four scoreless innings in which he struck out four batters.

College of Charleston got on the board first. Mershon reached on a one-out double to left field and came around to score on a single by Steffy. Merkel settled in, striking out Marr. Alertly, catcher David Melfi fired a strike to Ruggiero to get Steffy trying to steal to end the inning. Matthews recorded his first hit as a Seahawk in the top of the second, as he sent Brooks' pitch to left-center but was left stranded at second.

Both teams went scoreless until the visitors got on the board in their half of the fifth inning. Melfi was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Brooks. With one out in the inning, Ruggiero worked the count full. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, the veteran Seahawk infielder laced a single through the right side that plated home Melfi to tie the score at 1-1. Hayden came on for Merkel in the bottom of the inning. He got Sam Cochrane to fly out to centerfield before striking out Tyler Sorrentino and Merson.

Following a scoreless top of the sixth, the Cougars broke the tie, as Marr sent a solo home run to right field as Charleston grabbed the 2-1 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars added one more score. Cochrane walked and moved to second on a wild pitch by Hayden. Sorrentino reached on an infield single, which gave the home team runners on the corner with no outs. Pirrotta came on for Hayden and got Mershon to ground out to second while Cochrane crossed the plate as the College of Charleston went ahead by two, 3-1, and didn't relinquish the lead.

The final game of the series is slated for Sunday at noon.
