Baseball's Comeback Falls Short In Series Finale At College Of Charleston, 7-5

Charleston, SC - The Wagner baseball team trailed the College of Charleston 7-3 heading into the ninth inning when they erupted for two runs that closed the gap but couldn't complete the comeback, as the Seahawks were edged 7-5 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Newcomer Dante Faicchio paced the Seahawk offense, going 3 for 4 with three runs scored and connected on two solo home runs. Mateo Matthews, Mike Ruggiero, and Henry Martinez each produced an RBI for the visitors.

Frankie Wright (0-1) made his Seahawk debut, lasting 4.1 innings in which he gave up four earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three batters.

Wagner used three pitchers in relief of Wright, as Jake Toporek made his Wagner debut, throwing 1.1 frames in which he gave up two runs on a hit while walking one. Nick DeCarlo saw his first action this season, going 1.1 innings while giving up an unearned run on two hits. Senior John LaPointe pitched a scoreless inning in relief of DeCarlo.

The Cougars got two hits from Tyler Sorrentino and JT Marr with Cam Dean adding two RBIs for the home team.

Starter Connor Campbell allowed three runs on four hits while striking out three batters in four innings of work while not factoring in the decision. Cole Mathis (1-0) earned the win for CofC as he went four innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits, walking one, and striking out a game-high six batters. Michael Schultz earned his first save of the season.

College of Charleston got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Joseph Mershon drew a one-out walk and moved to second on the ground out by Tanner Steffy. Marr evened the count at 1-1 before doubling to left field, which brought in Mershon for the game's first run.

Wright was able to regain his composure on the mound and was able to get Trotter Harlan swinging for his first career strikeout.

Wagner wasted little time in tying up the ballgame. With one out, Faicchio sent a laser that cleared the left-field wall to tie the game at 1-1.

The Cougars broke the tie in their half of the third inning, as Sorrentino scored on a wild pitch by Wright. The first-year Seahawk limited the damage with a strikeout of Steffy to end the inning.

The Seahawks took their first lead of the series in the top of the fourth. Griffin Selby recorded his first hit in a Seahawk uniform, as he connected on a leadoff single through the right side.

With one out, Faicchio singled up the middle, giving the visitors a pair of runners. Matthews stepped in and roped a single to right-centerfield, as Selby raced home to tie the score.

Ruggiero worked the count full before sending a line drive to right that was snagged by Sam Cochrane as Faichhio tagged up on the play and gave Wagner a one-run lead, 3-2.

The College of Charleston scored twice in the fifth and sixth, in building a 6-3 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Preston Hall led off with a single to right before the Seahawks forced him out on a fielder's choice.

Cochrane doubled to left-center, giving the Cougars two men on as Sorrentino stepped in. On the second pitch he saw from Wright, he sent a single through the right side as Dean came in to score the tying run.

Toporek came on for Wright and the first batter he saw, Mershon, lofted a sacrifice fly that brought in Cochrane as the Cougars went ahead, 4-3. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars added two more on Dean's two-run single to centerfield.

Wagner threatened in the top of the eight as Ethan Valdez led off with a single and Henry Martinez, who pinch-hit for Maimu Kobayashi, walked on four straight pitches. Mathis was able to stop the threat with back-to-back strikeouts before getting the force out at second.

The College of Charleston tacked on an additional run in their half of the eighth, as Harlan scored on a throwing error by Bey on the sacrifice bunt attempt by Luke Wood, going up 7-3.

In the ninth, Faicchio stepped in and connected on his second home run of the afternoon, bringing Wagner to within three, 7-4.

Matthews was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a grounder by Ruggiero. David Melfi walked and he and Matthews moved up on a wild pitch by Schultz.

With two outs, Martinez singled through the right side that plated home Matthews, cutting the deficit down to 7-5. Cody Bey was up with the tying runs on but grounded out on the first pitch to end the ballgame.

Wagner will travel to Johnson City, TN to tangle with East Tennessee State for a three-game set, beginning on Friday, February 25, and running through Sunday, February 27.
