Sit Down With Head Coach Michelle Tumolo
What stood out to you the most about Wednesday's win, whether on the stat sheet or in looking back at the film?
TUMOLO: I am extremely proud of my team for showing up with total dominance. LIU is a very talented team and we knew that they were going to give us their best. We executed our game plan very well and played the full 60 minutes. We were connecting on all levels of the field!!
Saturday will mark the SEVENTH consecutive NEC Championship game appearance for this program, a new all-time record for the conference. Can you talk about what a run like that means both for Wagner and lacrosse in this community as a whole?
TUMOLO: That is so awesome. I have to recognize all the hard work that had been done before I stepped foot on campus in 2018. I wanted to be a part of the Wagner program because of the championship culture it had built. It all goes back to the players who give their everything day in and day out for this program. It means so much to us as a team, as a school, and as a community, where lacrosse is continuing to grow. We hope that a young lacrosse player from Staten Island sees that her dreams are able to be met in her hometown!
The all-conference awards were unveiled earlier this week: Five First Teamers, including a now two-time Midfielder of the Year, Two Second Teamers, an All-Rookie selection. What was your initial reaction to seeing all those honors bestowed on your team?
TUMOLO: My first reaction to all of these awards is that they are so well deserved. It's rewarding to see their hard work and dedication to the sport be recognized. I know that these players care more about the big award on Saturday more than anything individual, and that is what makes them special.
You spoke before the LIU game about not looking past that game to this one. Now that the team has reached yet another conference championship game, how do you keep things in perspective, especially for the freshmen/sophomores who haven't been here before?
TUMOLO: I remind them to take this all in. This is why they have worked so hard throughout their lives to get to these moments. There is no better feeling than championship weekend. I am so happy they get to experience it and feel the greatness of getting to Saturday! Now we just have to get the job done as a team!
