Teaneck, NJ -  The Wagner baseball team opens Northeast Conference (NEC) play this weekend with a three-game road series against the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.


Last Time Out For Wagner...
  • The Seahawks closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule this past weekend with a three-game set against the University of Maine Black Bears.
  • After splitting Saturday's doubleheader (Game 1 - Maine 5, Wagner 1 | Game 2 - Maine 2, Wagner 6), Wagner dropped the rubber matchup, 12-3, on Sunday afternoon. 
  • Josh Casado allowed two runs on one hit while striking out six over 3.1 innings. 
  • Jared Gillen went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI. Cody Bey added two hits. 
  • Quinn Mimnaugh got his first collegiate hit and RBI in Sunday's contest, sending a double down the right-field line in the bottom of the ninth. 


Seahawks On The Mound...
  • Ryan Lauk will be making his third start of the season. In his outing against Maine (3/13), the Mullica Hill, NJ native went 5.1 innings while giving up two runs on six hits and striking out four batters. 
  • Pat Gallagher didn't allow a run in his 4.1 innings of work in the second game of the doubleheader against Maine (3/13) as he struck out three and walked two. 
  • Justin Beyer, Dallen Turner, Nick LePre, and Mike Pirrotta all made their season debuts in the series finale on March 14 against Maine. 
  • Jagger Duquette and Nicholas Hanson made their Seahawk debuts last Sunday. Both recorded a strikeout in their respective outings. 


Wagner At The Plate...
  • Through March 17, Gillen ranks tenth in the nation in batting average, as he is hitting .500 on the young season. He is also among the top-20 hitters in doubles per game (0.60). 
  • On the year, Gillen has posted a .500/1.277/.714 with three doubles, four RBI, and two stolen bases.
  • Veteran Seahawk Tyler Sanfilippo, leads the club with three home runs and 7 RBI.


Against Fairleigh Dickinson...
  • Fairleigh Dickinson leads the all-time series,  79-74-0
  • The Seahawks are 9-1 against the Knights in their last ten meetings. 
  • The Seahawks out-scored the Knights 34-10 in a three-game sweep in their last series in 2019.
 
 
About The Knights...
  • Fairleigh Dickinson comes into the contest at 1-4 and 0-2 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play after dropping a 6-5 decision against LIU on March 17. 
  • James Donlon, who will take the mound in game one of the series for FDU, led the way at the plate against the Sharks, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and three RBI. 
  • Hunter D'Amato drove in a pair on a 1 for 4 day. 
  • The Knights are led by Rob Ditoma, who is in his second season as head coach after being on the coaching staff at Fordham the previous five seasons. 
  • Mike Veit and Donlon lead the team with five hits while Veit is batting a team-high .263.
  • Donlon has the lone home run of the year for the Knights and paces the ballclub with four RBI. 


Seahawk Tidbits...
  • Wagner head coach, Jim Carone, needs two wins for 200 in his career.
  • He would be just the second Seahawk bench boss to achieve the feat, joining Joe Litterio, who amassed 240 wins in his 12-year tenure on Grymes Hill.
  • The Seahawks were picked third in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
  • Wagner returns 34 players from the 2020 squad while welcoming eight newcomers. 
  • Among the returners, Freddy Sabido is vying to become the 12th Seahawks all-time to reach 200 career hits as he enters the 2021 season with 192 career hits. Additionally, he ranks eighth all-time in program history in both home runs and RBI, with 22 and 118 RBI, respectively
