Women's Basketball Opens Northeast Conference Play At Sacred Heart Thursday

Seahawks and Pioneers will play a two-game set on Thursday, Jan. 7 and Friday, Jan. 8

Fairfield, CT – To officially bring in the new year, the Wagner women's basketball team will open Northeast Conference (NEC) play with a two-game set at Sacred Heart.

The conference-opener for the Seahawks is set to tip-off at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a 4:00 p.m. start time on Friday afternoon. 

Thursday's contest will air to a national audience on ESPN+ as Craig D'Amico and Joe DeSantis bring you the action.

Seahawks In NEC Openers...
  • Since NEC play began in 1986-87, Wagner is 13-21 in league lid-lifters. 
  • The Seahawks last won its conference opener back on Dec. 29, 2017 when the team gave then second-year head coach Heather Jacobs a 75-66 road victory over Bryant. 
  • Wagner is opening up its league slate against Sacred Heart for the first time since Dec. 13, 2003, a contest in which the Green & White earned a 72-62 home victory. 
 
 
 Scouting the Seahawks...
  • Wagner was predicted to finish sixth in the NEC Preseason Poll. 
  • In the season opener at Seton Hall, back on Dec. 11, junior Emilija Krista Grava poured in a team-high 18 points, ten of which coming in the opening quarter.
  • Senior Khaleah Edwards chipped in 13 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 37 minutes of action. 
  • Junior guard Raven Pitt garnered her first career start against the Pirates, logging 23 minutes and netting four points. 
  • Three newcomers to Grymes Hill made their Wagner debuts: graduate transfer Kate Tokuhara played 18 minutes and scored four points while corralling three rebounds in her first start of the season. 
  • Freshmen Ciara Brannon and Marisa Sanchez-Henry made their first appearances in a Seahawk uniform, with Sanchez-Henry dropping six points on 2 of 3 shooting from the floor. 
  • Brannon added three points in 11 minutes of action. 
 
 
 Scouting the Pioneers...
  • Sacred Heart has played in four games this season, posting a 1-3 mark thus far. 
  • The Pioneers enter with a 1-1 conference record after splitting its NEC contests with LIU back on Dec. 15-16.
  • Sacred Heart couldn't complete the comeback, as they dropped a 72-64 decision at Iona back on December 22.
  • Jayla Davis netted a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds. 
  • Nikki Johnson added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Kelsey Wood missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight points.
  • Sonia Smith is pacing the Sacred Heart offense, pouring in close to 10.0 ppg off-the-bench.

  • Wagner is scheduled to travel across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Thursday Jan. 14 and Friday, Jan. 15 as the Seahawks will take on the LIU Sharks.
