Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team will play its first of three straight games at the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday night, as the Seahawks take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 7:00 pm.
Double-Doubles
In Saturday's loss to Central Connecticut, three Seahawks recorded double-doubles. Graduate student
Curtis Cobb III led the Seahawks once again, scoring 21 points in his fifth 20-point performance of the season. Junior
Elijah Ford added 16 points and 16 rebounds in his third consecutive start, while graduate student
Patrick Szpir and junior
Alex Morales contributed 10 points as well as 10 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
Ford Picking Up Speed
Earning the start in three straight games, junior
Elijah Ford made a big impact, most recently scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in Wagner's loss at Central Connecticut. Over the last three games, Ford is averaging 17 points and 10.3 rebounds. The Newark, NJ native was named an NEC Prime Performer last week and is now averaging 8.4 points and 5.6 rebounds on the year.
Cobb Leads The Way
Graduate student
Curtis Cobb III paces the Seahawks with 17.5 points per game, which is good for fourth in the NEC. Cobb is especially successful from long range, sinking 3.18 three-pointers per game, which is good for third in the conference.
Floor General
Junior point guard
Chase Freeman continues to guide the Seahawk offense. Freeman leads the Northeast Conference with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.32 and is third in the league at 35.44 minutes per game.
Tight Race
Thursday's matchup with Fairleigh Dickinson marks the midway point of conference play for the Seahawks. In a tight Northeast Conference (NEC) race, only three games separate third place and ninth place at the moment, giving every team a chance at a postseason run. Wagner has qualified for the NEC tournament in each of head coach
Bashir Mason's seven seasons at the helm of the Seahawk program.
The Series
Thursday's contest marks the 112th all-time meeting between the schools with Wagner holding a slim 56-55 edge in the long and competitive head-to-head series between schools separated by just 31 miles. The Knights and Seahawks split their regular season series, before FDU knocked off Wagner in the quarterfinals of last season's NEC Tournament. In their last matchup at the Spiro Sports Center, the Seahawks earned a 66-60 win behind 25 points and 11 rebounds from redshirt senior guard
Romone Saunders.
Scouting The Knights
The defending NEC champions come into Thursday's matchup with a 4-15 overall record and 2-6 conference record. Away from home, the Knights are 1-12 on the season, with their only road victory of the season coming against Bryant, a 77-73 victory on January 4.
Next up for Wagner
Following Thursday's matchup, Wagner will take on Robert Morris on Thursday, February 6, at 7:00 pm.
